Softball ends magical SCWS run as runner-up

DUBOIS, Pa. (May 15, 2025) — Florida National (26-27) produced a solid afternoon of softball in the championship round of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Small College World Series. The Conquistadors forced game two against the Southern Maine Community College Seawolves (32-7) after defeating them 4-0 but lost the title match 10-0.

In game one against the Seawolves, FNU used runs in the second and fifth to hand SMCC its first loss of the SCWS. Senior Yleisha Perez continued her exceptional tournament performance with an RBI single to get FNU ahead 1-0. The Conquistadors then went on to score three runs on back-to-back fielder's choices that got Thanysha Gil and Tara McCaffery in play.

SMCC looked thrown off early, and pitcher Sarah Wilkins played a relatively even game with five strikeouts to her four runs allowed. SMCC's Sloan Scotvold pitched the final two frames and was able to keep FNU off the board despite three Conquistador hits.

FNU's Brunella Beteta threw another impressive contest from the circle with two strikeouts and no walks.

The second game of the afternoon saw Wilkins put up a stellar pitching performance for the Seawolves. Wilkins' 16th win of the 2025 season featured a nearly perfect game of two hits, one strikeout, one walk and no runs allowed.

Offensively, the Seawolves jumped to a 4-0 lead in the third and never looked back. RBI singles by Delanie Perry, Emily Hutchins and Wilkins were at the heart of this scoring run in the third, and Perry added another RBI single and double in the fourth and sixth frames.

FNU was limited in the batter's box, connecting on hits from Alissia Vega and Isabella Silva in the first two innings before going cold the remainder of the title match. Both teams had one error apiece, as FNU placed second in the SCWS for the first time in program history.

*Southern Maine Community College is a non-countable opponent for the NAIA. These two games will not affect FNU's overall record in 2025.
