FNU falls to Salem, ending extraordinary run at the SCWS

DUBOIS, Pa. (May 14, 2026) — Conquistador softball's (29-19) valiant effort at the USCAA Small College World Series ended in a 9-3 loss to the Salem University Tigers (23-34) Thursday. Salem handed FNU an 8-4 loss on May 12 before FNU battled its way back into contention with three victories the following day.

In its rematch against Salem, the Tigers got off to another hot start offensively and took a 5-0 lead in the first inning. SU's Kylie Zinn earned the first RBI of the afternoon on a single to right field, eventually scoring a run herself as a part of Ali Shrieve's grand slam later in the frame.

Despite the early deficit, FNU kept itself in the game with runs in the third by Brunella Beteta and Isabella Silva on errant throws by Salem's Jacobi Gledhill and Bella Ortiz. Salem responded with two runs over the third and fourth innings, nullifying FNU's scores on RBI base hits by Shrieve and Gledhill.

Zinn made it a 9-2 Tiger lead with her second RBI single of the afternoon in the sixth, as FNU could not string together enough runs in the seventh to force a game two. Notably, sophomore Isabella Silva delivered an inside-of-the-park home run on a 2-2 count before the second out of the seventh.

Pitcher Ava Baronick got the start against the Tigers, getting the first two outs of the opening frame before Beteta took over for the next five innings. Beteta had all six strikeouts for FNU's pitching staff, and Sophia White grabbed the final out of the sixth.

Over its stay in DuBois, Pa., FNU went 4-2 on the turf, connecting on 69 hits and 47 runs. Alisha Lanyon had three home runs in the tournament, as FNU's offense run-ruled three out of its five opponents in four days. Beteta, White and Baronick were stellar from the circle throughout FNU's trip, combining for 37 strikeouts.
