Softball moves on to Small College World Series Championship round

DUBOIS, Pa. (May 13, 2026) — Florida National softball (29-18) booked its second consecutive trip to the USCAA Small College World Series Championship Round, besting Bay Path University (22-19), 11-1 and Penn State New Kensington 9-0 (24-11), in a pair of five-inning victories.

Against Bay Path, FNU overcame a lengthy weather delay after defeating Southern Maine Community College 5-2 at 10 a.m. A 4 p.m. game got pushed to a 6:30 p.m. start time, but this did not deter FNU from taking a commanding 2-0 lead on a home run from none other than Alisha Lanyon.

The NCAA DII transfer connected on a bomb to left field and forced in Gianna Hall for the early lead. Along with conceding a home run in the opening frame, BPU pitcher Madison Sunderland's throwing error in the third got Alyssa Julien on board and ran in Isabella Silva. FNU went on to record three more runs in the third, thanks to an RBI double from Hall, a base hit by Elizabeth Owens, and another double in the inning, this time by Kyra Rigozzi.

Bay Path momentarily stopped the bleeding with an RBI double by Caroline Austin in the bottom of the frame to make it a 6-1 FNU lead and brought in pitcher Kaitlyn Kerstetter to take over duties from the circle for Sunderland. Meanwhile, Brunella Beteta was dealing early, collecting seven strikeouts in the first three frames. She ended the victory with 10 strikeouts and one walk.

In the fourth, FNU ran up the score with five RBIs in the inning. Rigozzi tripled for three FNU scores after Carollann McClelland made it to first base on a hit to left field to force in a run for Hall. After a final hit up the middle by Alissia Vega for a Rigozzi score, FNU exited the frame with a comfortable 11-1 lead and did not concede another run in its five-inning triumph.

Opposite the PSU New Kensington Nittany Lions, Florida National proved to be too much to handle offensively with 11 hits to top a 3-0 day in DuBois, Pa. An Owens single and an error by the PSU infield helped FNU take a 2-0 lead in the first, and a sacrifice fly by Annissa Quinonez ran in Sophia White to make it a three-run lead for FNU in the second.

White got the start from the circle, tallying five strikeouts in four innings of work, and grabbed a two-RBI single in the third. Silva was once again decisive with her swing for a timely triple in the fourth, kicking off a four-run frame for the top-seeded Conquistadors. Lanyn scored on another costly Lion error while Silva made it home on a double by Lanyon to help run-rule FNU's second-straight opponent.

White grabbed her 15th win from the circle in 2026, allowing just two hits, no walks and forcing seven strikeouts.

Up Next: FNU will need to win back-to-back games against the Salem University Tigers tomorrow with game one beginning at noon.
