Conquistadors defeat Carlow for trip to USCAA Championship Round

| Box Score 2

DUBOIS, Pa. (May 14, 2025) — Softball (25-27) rebounded from a tough 1-0 loss to the Southern Maine Community College Seawolves (31-6) with a massive come-from-behind 9-3 win against the Carlow University Celtics. The Conquistadors tallied 19 hits through both games and relied on a two-RBI single from Yleisha Perez to take the lead against the Celtics in the sixth.

In game one, FNU was outlasted in a tough, competitive dual opposite Southern Maine. The Seawolves had two quick outs to start the opening frame before Delanie Perry got in play with a double to left against Brunella BetetaPerry would soon make a trip to home plate after catcher Emily Hutchins connected on a single up the middle of the field to make it a 1-0 ball game. This would be enough to win the game for SMCC, as their defense was strong enough to hold off an impressive FNU squad.

The Conquistadors totaled seven hits in the loss but were stumped offensively through multiple innings. Notably, SMCC got the second out of the sixth on a diving catch by center fielder Olivia Hill. Beteta was nearly perfect from the mound, allowing five hits and collecting two strikeouts in her 14th loss of 2025.

In game two, FNU was once again behind the eight ball late in the contest. They trailed 3-1 in the fifth inning against Carlow. The Celtics answered a run scored by Annissa Quinonez on a wild pitch with RBI doubles and singles by Taylor Egley and Emilee Speicher, respectively.

In the sixth, Quinonez was clutch with an RBI sacrifice fly before Perez made it to second on her two-run single that gave FNU a 4-3 lead. An FNU avalanche followed, as Sabrina Castelli and Perez recorded RBI singles before the game was over. Alyssa Julien also shined with a two-run double in the sixth.

This is the second game in the 2025 Small College World Series where FNU came from behind for an unprecedented victory. The Conquistadors also make their first appearance in the championship round since May 2022, and their first under head coach Wesley Pollock

Up Next: FNU will face SMCC again tomorrow at noon. The team needs back-to-back wins to conquer its third USCAA National Championship.

*Southern Maine Community College is a non-countable opponent for the NAIA. This 1-0 loss will not affect FNU's overall record in 2025.
