Mustangs corral FNU for early World Series exit

DUBOIS, Pa. (May 13, 2025) — Conquistador baseball (20-19) was eliminated from the 2025 USCAA Small College World Series after falling to the Central Maine Community College Mustangs (27-14) 10-2 on Tuesday. FNU had five hits and three errors against a formidable Mustang squad that jumped to a 6-0 lead in the first inning. 

Florida National's Josh Higgins got the start on the pitcher's mound but saw his afternoon take a turn rather quickly. At the bottom of the opening frame, Central Maine loaded the bases, and an unfortunate walk by Higgins scored the day's first run. What followed was a grand slam by Cody Cleaveland.

Higgins got a strikeout on Zac Gorman, but his fourth walk of the frame forced Coach Nick Strong to send in Isaiah Franco to take over pitching duties. CMCC squeezed out another run on an error before the frame came to a close. Unfortunately, much of the damage had been inflicted. 

FNU got its first run of the game thanks to a sacrifice fly from designated hitter Christopher Rivera in the third. His shot to right field bought enough time to score Adrian Roman, but CMCC responded with four consecutive runs through the fourth and fifth innings. Two of those scores were RBI walks pitched by senior Tristan Petty. 

The Conquistadors posted one more run in the sixth on an RBI groundout by Roger Viloria. Mario Benjamin pitched the last 1.2 innings of the game, allowing no runs and tallying three strikeouts. Despite Benjamin's performance down the stretch, the Mustangs used their lead to ride off into the next round of the SCWS. 

FNU is now 4-4 (3-2 excluding NAIA non-countable opponents) all-time in DuBois, Pa., after finishing third in 2024 as a tenth seed. 


*Central Maine Community College is a non-countable opponent for the NAIA. This 10-2 loss does not affect Florida National's overall record in 2025.
