Six home runs highlighted a 1-1 opening day at the Small College World Series

DUBOIS, Pa. (May 11, 2026) — The Conquistadors (24-26) got off to a hot start in the 2026 USCAA Small College World Series with a 15-5 win against the University of Cincinnati Clermont College Cougars (26-22) before dropping a thrilling contest against the top-seeded Salem University Tigers (34-17), 6-3.

Cesar Mora (two), James Snyder, Jesus Sosa and Christopher Rivera (grand slam) connected on crushing home runs in game one, halting any hope of a comeback by UC Clermont. Newly minted All-American Alejandro De Armas put FNU ahead in the first with a two-run double before making it a 3-0 affair with a ground ball in the sixth. Clermont's chances went from bad to worse as FNU tallied three RBIs on home runs by Sosa and Mora in the fourth. A Rivera single ran in Snyder to cap off a four-run frame for the Conquistadors.

UC Clermont finally got a run across in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a sacrifice fly by Cody Sunday and a double by Conner Kasten. What followed for FNU was another solid inning of offense. Through the fifth and sixth, the Conquistadors scored on a UC Clermont error and tallied three more scores on home runs by Mora and De Armas.

FNU held their opponent to just three more runs the rest of the way, icing their victory with a grand slam by 2024 USCAA All-American selection Rivera in the seventh. Pitcher Braden Parmley was stout in his World Series debut, ending the day with five strikeouts and two earned runs through six innings. Evan Dalmau pitched the final inning for FNU and picked up a pair of strikeouts from the bump.

Game two for FNU saw the Conquistadors take an early 1-0 lead on a one-score double by Snyder in the first. Salem's first runs of the contest came in the second, taking a three-run lead on an RBI fielder's choice by Joe Wintermute and a three-run homer by Brandon Hoftijzer. Cody Thomas added an insurance run in the fourth with a double to right-center field, but a home run by Rivera in the sixth brought FNU within two.

Hoftijzer came up big in crunch time, connecting on a sacrifice fly in the sixth, as FNU was shut out in the seventh. Julio Amoedo got the start and was credited with the loss. The freshman went for four innings, earning three strikeouts. Kaden Varnadoe, Jose Chavez, and Brandon Saunders split up the last two frames, with Saunders pitching the sixth.

Up Next: Baseball plays tomorrow at 4 p.m. with its championship aspirations on the line.
