Conquistadors defeated by Apprentice in SCWS opener

DUBOIS, Pa. (May 12, 2025) — Florida National (20-19) faced a tough customer in its 11-1 loss to the Apprentice School Newport News Builders (26-16) in its first game of the 2025 USCAA Small College World Series.

Florida National fell behind 2-1 after the third inning and allowed nine unanswered runs over the next two frames for an early exit in DuBois, Pa. The Conquistadors rotated five arms on the mound but conceded 16 hits, totaling three strikeouts as a pitching staff.

The Builders relied on an RBI single from Jeremy Harmon and a run scored by Landon Turner in the first and second innings for their first lead in the contest. FNU showed some life with an RBI single by Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) All-Tournament team member Adrian Roman that scored Samuel Del Valle.

Unfortunately, De Valle's run would be all of FNU's offense for the afternoon. The Builders responded with seven runs in the fourth, kicked off by an RBI double from Turner. This signaled the end of Alexis Dubeau's time on the mound. The lefty had two strikeouts and a walk before fellow Canadian and 6-8 righty Cole Philips took over.

Matt Phoebus, however, followed his teammate's example with a one-score single to run in Turner, and a double by Camden Weston was enough to send pinch runner Connor Gregory safely to home plate. Base hits by Jett Winslow, Hunter Johnson and Caleb Russell helped make it a 9-1 affair. Evan Dalmau was able to end the inning with two outs after relieving Philips on four batters faced.

Harmon ended the game with a two-run double in the fifth inning against FNU's left-handed pitcher Keorden Leito. Roman, Christopher Rivera and Valle were responsible for all three of FNU's hits in the loss, and the Conquistadors recorded no errors.

Up Next: FNU takes on the loser of Central Penn College and Central Maine Community College tomorrow at 1 p.m.

*Apprentice School Newport News Builders is a non-countable opponent for the NAIA. Therefore, this 11-1 loss is treated as an exhibition and does not affect Florida National's overall record in 2025.
