Silva resigns as women’s basketball head coach

HIALEAH, Fla. (March 30, 2025) — Florida National's longest tenured women's basketball head coach Yahveh Silva has resigned from his position with the university effective immediately. Silva held a 55-68 (.447) record, taking over the program in the 2019-2020 season.

Silva departed FNU to become the recruiting coordinator for Atlantis University, a USCAA institution in downtown Miami, Florida. He joined Florida National after the inaugural 2018-2019 season, when then-head coach Matt Stearsman exited for personal reasons.

In his first season at the helm, Silva went 13-12, and the Puerto Rican national has put his team in the national conversation throughout his last few years with the team. In 2023-2024, Silva led the Lady Conquistadors to their first NAIA Tournament appearance after a runner-up finish at the Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) Tournament.

The Conquistadors solidified their bid to nationals with an incredible run in the CAC tourney, defeating Voorhees University (South Carolina) and Arkansas Baptist College. FNU faltered against the College of the Ozarks (Missouri) in the final and ultimately ended their season with a 95-67 loss to No. 1-ranked Marian University.

Despite an early exit, Silva still pushed his team the following season to the CAC tournament, tallying three CAC All-Conference honorees. Notably, Charlette Leurs was named Newcomer of the Year in her senior season and grabbed a second team selection.

Including Leurs, Silva totaled eight CAC All-Conference members, nine NAIA Daktronics Scholar-Athletes and nine USCAA All-Americans since 2021-2022.

Silva's time at FNU will be remembered for the consistency and compassion he brought to the position. His six years in charge have surely shaped the program for years to come, and the FNU family wishes him nothing but the best in his new role.

"Today, I conclude my chapter at Florida National University, but not before thanking you for such extraordinary years," said Silva.

"I met spectacular people and took with me great memories, victories we enjoyed together and defeats we mourned. That made us not just a team, but a better family
."

Florida National will now begin a search for its new head women's basketball coach.
