Shock outlasted FNU in CAC quarterfinal round 57-52

LAWRENCE, Kan. (Feb. 27, 2025) — Florida National women's basketball (9-13) was once again bested by the Washington Adventist University Shock (16-10), this time in the first game of the 2025 Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) Women's Basketball Championship Tournament.

Florida National knows Washington Adventist well, falling 84-76 on Jan. 19 at the CAC WAU Classic. FNU trailed by 11 at halftime and was unable to pressure the Shock down the stretch on the road.

When these two sides faced each other in a winner-take-all quarterfinal, the Conquistadors righted their past mistakes with a 19-11 lead after the first quarter at the Coffin Sports Complex. Janelisse Marty Marrero came to play, shooting 3-4 from the field for eight first-quarter points. Kaylynn Jean-Gilles and Charlette Leurs combined for nine in the opening frame while the Shock shot an abysmal 22.7%.

Amani Ball and Deryanis Colon Velez had four points apiece to open the game as WAU looked to turn things around in the second. FNU was outscored before halftime 13-11 behind five points by Isabela Lujan-Gonzales. Leurs kept FNU afloat with a 2-2 performance from the field, and FNU carried a fragile 30-24 lead into the break.

WAU took control of the game, however, in the second to hold FNU to just six third-quarter points. Marty Marrero's two made threes were responsible for all the Conquistadors' production in the second to last period, while Lujan-Gonzales exploded for 11 points on three made threes. With just a 25% conversion rate, FNU still battled in the fourth to keep its postseason hopes alive.

The Shock did just enough in the fourth to punch their ticket to the next round, despite nine points from Leurs. WAU outscored the Conquistadors 18-16 on 12 combined points from Ball and Lujan-Gonzales. FNU won the rebound race 48-40 thanks to 18 boards from Leurs. The senior forward ended the 2024-25 season with 13 consecutive double-doubles after posting 19 points against the Shock.

Notably, newly minted All-CAC First Team honoree, Marty Marrero, ended her illustrious FNU career with 20 points, 10 rebounds and four assists.
