Volleyball’s hot start cools in 3-0 loss to Gyrenes

AVE MARIA, Fla. (Sept. 3, 2026) — Conquistador volleyball's (2-5) 10-4 lead in the early stages of set one against the Ave Maria University Gyrenes (4-1) became a distant memory, as the Gyrenes methodically exited the Tom Golisano Field House with their fourth win in five matches.

This was Florida National's second road match against a Sun Conference team in two weeks, defeating Florida Memorial 3-1 on August 25. Sophomore Chriselle Ferdinand led the way with 15 kills versus the Lions and looked primed for another big performance in the opening frame against the Gyrenes.

Florida National's early 10-4 advantage was born out of an all-around performance from Ferdinand. The Miami native had one assisted block, a kill and a pair of service aces during the Conquistadors' run. This forced an early AMU timeout, and to its coaching staff's credit, this seemed to snap the Gyrenes back into focus.

FNU was held to just six points the remainder of the set, as Lucy Hudson and Greta Heiney posted four combined kills down the stretch of the 25-16 AMU victory. FNU hit a less-than-ideal.135, allowing nine Gyrene kills while committing 10 attacking errors.

Set two saw AMU get off to a better start than game one, earning a 14-8 lead off a service ace by Caroline Myers. FNU's attacking woes continued to hold them back, ending the frame with 13 errors in their attack and just eight kills. AMU didn't capitalize much on offense, but just seven kills on its end of the court propelled their team to a 25-19 win in game two.

To close out the action Thursday in Ave Maria, Fla., the home team closed out the visiting Conquistadors behind 18 kills and a pair of service aces. Ferdinand once again paced the team in kills, while Pelin Alci and Ariana Long led the team in the assists and digs race, respectively.

AMU's near 10-year winning streak against Florida National continues (16-0), with FNU's last win over the Gyrenes coming in September 2017.

Up Next: FNU turns its attention to a Sept. 15 road match against the USCAA's Trinity College of Florida Tigers at 6 p.m.
