Volleyball splits two-game road trip

BABSON PARK, Fla. (Sept. 16, 2026) — Florida National volleyball (3-6) fought hard for a 3-1 win over the Trinity College of Florida Tigers (5-2) before falling by the same score to the Webber International University Warriors (6-6) on a back-to-back road trip Sept. 15-16.

Against the TCF Tigers, FNU relied on a top-shelf performance from newcomer Carolina Goncalves. The Portuguese national recorded a team-high 16 kills while Pelin Alci ran the offense with 37 assists. Alci was also solid defensively with 13 digs. FNU fell in the first set 22-25 but was undeniable through the next two, delivering 25-14 and 25-10 wins on the road.

FNU closed out its third win of 2026 in a close 25-23 triumph in game three, as two-time Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) Defender of the Week Ariana Long ended her evening with 15 digs and a service ace. FNU is now 15-1 all-time against TCF, with its last loss against the Tigers coming during the 2016 season.

Opposite the Webber Warriors, FNU had another tough opening set and fell 25-16. Chriselle Ferdinand and Lily Hitchcock combined for all four of FNU's kills in the frame, while Hitchcock went to work for a block at the net. Diana Stetsko and Joliessa Perez had a service ace apiece, while Long recorded an impressive eight digs. This defensive effort from the senior was not enough to stop a six-dig first game by WIU's Alejandra Aponte. Three successful terminations by Cristina Marrero and two more from Hailey Mull only made it easier for the Warriors to close out their first point of the match.

Game two saw the Conquistadors get out to a great 11-6 lead behind four early Ferdinand kills and three tremendous kills by Goncalves. FNU sustained this momentum through the entire set, keeping WIU at a .150 hitting percentage. Notably, it was Goncalves fourth successful attack of the second that sealed FNU's 25-21 win.

The third proved to be a classic back-and-forth battle with Webber outlasting the Conquistadors 27-25. Both teams traded blows throughout the all-important third set, with Sara Lizano Joya's third kill of the game tying the match at 24 all ahead of a Webber timeout. A Cassandra Kendall attack error made it a 25-25 deadlock, and it was back-to-back kills by Kara Doan and Lucianna Marinella that made the difference down the stretch. Webber had 20 kills in the set compared to 13 from the Conquistador side of the court. FNU also conceded five service errors, hitting .149.

Webber used this clutch win to power through the fourth with an impressive 25-11 run to end the contest. Webber racked up 13 more kills in the set, keeping FNU's hitting at -.091. The Warriors' service game was elite in crunch time with four service aces, as three kills from Marinella sent FNU back home with a 3-1 loss.

FNU drops to 4-14 against Webber through 18 matches, and 1-9 in Babson Park, Fla. Ferdinand had a 10-kill match, Alci recorded 38 assists, while Long was two digs short of a 30-dig evening.

Up Next: FNU opens conference play with a noon match against Florida College Friday at Bucky Dent Park.
