Conquistadors face 3-1 setback against FC Falcons

HIALEAH, Fla. (Sept. 18, 2026) — Conquistador volleyball (3-7) showed great promise in its 3-1 loss to fellow Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) member Florida College (9-4), stealing set one 25-22 before its 3-1 defeat.

In the opener, FNU looked true to form in front of a home crowd to take a one-nil match lead. Troubles at the service line plagued both teams, as they combined for 12 service errors in game one. This seemed to keep the contest in the balance, and each team traded points in a close 14-14 frame. It wasn't until a kill by Sara Lizano Joya gave FNU a 22-18 lead that the Conquistadors looked in a great position to come out on top. To their credit, the Falcons battled back to make it 23-24 until back-to-back kills from Grace Leffler and Chriselle Ferdinand wrapped up play in set one.

Game two seemed to be another close set, as FC and FNU came to a 10-10 deadlock early in the set. The Falcons began to pull away from that point on, relying on a six-kill frame by Raquel Teixeira to claim the 25-16 win. Set three saw both teams switch sides on the court, but the change in perspective only saw the Falcons grow more comfortable on every level of play. Miranda Campos posted three of her eight kills in the third before Margarida Almeida's sixth successful termination of the match put her team up 2-1.

FNU did make things interesting late in the third, posting four straight points to make it 24-19 and forcing an FC timeout. The Falcons came out of the break and were able to get the job done, but this did signal a very competitive and important fourth set for the Conquistadors. Unfortunately, FC jumped to a 16-10 lead after a service error by Ariana Long, despite the senior ending the day with a team-high 15 digs. The Falcons played smart with 10 kills in the final stretch, ending play with a service ace delivered by Taina de Lima Nunes.

Notably, Leffler was exceptional with 10 kills, while Ferdinand ended her afternoon with ten. Pelin Alci had another stellar contest with 31 assists, as the Conquistadors dropped to 10-17 all-time against their most local CAC rival.

Up Next: Florida National is back in action Sept. 25 against Keiser University. The first serve will be delivered at 5 p.m., from West Palm Beach, Fla.
