Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Brenda Bogle

Men’s soccer makes it two victories in a row with win over Florida Polytechnic

LAKELAND, Fla. (Sept. 3, 2026) — Florida National men's soccer (2-2-0) used David Luque Rivero's and Juan Pugin's third goal of 2026 to close out Florida Polytechnic University (3-1-0) Thursday. This was the first meeting between these teams in either program's history and marks FNU's first win streak of 2026.

Things got off to a slow start for the Conquistadors at the Lake Myrtle Sports Complex, as they experienced over an hour delay due to lightning in the area. After around an hour and a half of waiting, it took only eight minutes to break the nil-nil deadlock. Last week's conquering hero Luque Rivero answered the call once again with a successful penalty kick against FPU's goalie Andres Villegas.

This early goal gave FNU enough momentum in its attack, and a brilliant five-save opening half by goalkeeper Ignacio Pacheco proved to be enough to keep the home team off the board before the break. Notably, FNU recorded seven shots compared to nine from Florida Polytechnic. The Phoenixes, despite the deficit, were heavily pushing their attack and claimed all four of the corner kicks awarded in the half.

Just over 16 minutes into the second, Juan Pugin made it a 2-0 match with an unassisted goal to put his team in a great spot down the stretch. FPU was held to one shot during this time frame despite coming away with two more corner kicks against FNU's backline. FPU would not be discouraged for long, as Tarquin Adams laced his team's first score in the 74th minute after the game's second penalty was awarded.

FPU pressed and pushed the pace of the contest in its search for an equalizer, boasting seven shots in the half with no goal in sight for the home team. In the 87th, Pacheco was crucial with a skillful save on an attempt by Arthur Vega, and the Conquistadors expertly used the expiring time to exit the pitch victorious.

Up Next: Men's soccer stays on the road for a 1:30 p.m. match versus Thomas University this Saturday.
