Conquistadors come out on top in a high-scoring match against Thomas

THOMASVILLE, Ga. (Sept. 5, 2026) — Conquistador men's soccer (3-2-0) executed a gritty comeback against the Thomas University Night Hawks (3-2-0), 3-2. FNU trailed twice in the victory and relied on a David Luque Rivero score in the second half to close out a shorthanded Night Hawk squad.

In the opening half, it took just under 14 minutes for the Night Hawks to capitalize on a gift from FNU's defensive line. A blown distribution between the keeper and a defender allowed Ethan Moore a direct pass to Edward Sack for the forward's second goal of 2026. Florida National would not be deterred so easily, however, posting eight shot attempts in the first period compared to just five opportunities for the Night Hawks.

This constant pursuit paid off for the Conquistadors on a 42nd-minute goal by Mateo Limardo, assisted by Juan Ignacio Munoz Arbizu. Limardo's much-needed score leveled the contest once again, and what followed was a highly intense battle in the second frame.

Three minutes into the final period, Moore and Sack combined once more, this time for Moore's fifth goal in five matches. FNU ratcheted up their defense and, unfortunately, saw Yosuke Shimizu booked on a yellow card in the 53rd. In more dramatic fashion, Thomas played the final 28 minutes with 10 men after Elia Casali earned a red card.

This left TU open for attack, and Luque Rivero stepped up once again with his fourth goal of the season (fourth in three matches) thanks to a high-caliber assist from newcomer Liam Donoghue. This tied the match at two goals apiece, and TU could not seem to adjust a man down. It was an unassisted goal by Riku Yasuda in the 83rd that made the difference on a hot Saturday afternoon in the Peach State.

Thomas recorded 10 shots while FNU tallied 16 (seven on goal). Goalie Damien Fortin brought in four saves as the Night Hawks were whistled for 14 fouls and three yellow cards.

Goalkeeper Ignacio Pacheco had a solid evening with four saves, facing six shots on goal. FNU is now 2-2-2 against Thomas University all-time, with its last victory coming in a 2-1 match in September 2022.

Up Next: FNU has a short trip to RV St. Thomas University next Thursday for a 7 p.m. battle under the lights of AutoNation Field.
