Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Brenda Bogle

Florida National closes out a tough AMU squad Friday 2-1

HIALEAH, Fla. (Sept. 25, 2026) — Florida National men's soccer (6-4-0) used brilliant passing and an impressive individual effort on its two goals to handle the Ave Maria University Gyrenes (6-4-0), 2-1 Friday morning. FNU is now a perfect 12-0-0 against the Gyrenes since 2015.

Florida National's movement on and off the ball was key to its success in the first half, as it drew eight of its 19 corner kicks in the first 45 minutes. AMU's defense was formidable, however, weathering eight promising opportunities at a goal from the Conquistadors' attacking third. In the 40th, FNU finally broke down the Gyrenes with quick back-to-back passes between David Luque Rivero and Augusto Pugin, setting up the second goal of 2026 for Dylan Robert Ray Frank Gibbs.

The Gyrenes ended the first with five shots and an impressive performance from keeper Noah Balyeat, who had three of his eight saves before halftime.

Six minutes into the second period, AMU found an equalizer on a stellar header off a throw-in delivered by Timothy Brannock. Forward Chet Krushefski rose above FNU's backline and slipped the ball past Vitor Caetano Pedrosa towards the bottom left side of the net. FNU sought out a game-winning goal against a Gyrene squad forced to defend with 10 men after Angelo Fernando was sent off in the 53rd. The Skokie, Ill., native was shown a red card for an unnecessary, costly hit on Luque Rivero, thus opening a lane for FNU to get back in front in a hurry.

Just past the 62nd minute of play, Pugin lulled his defender into a less-than-ideal position to block his shot attempt on the left side of the penalty area, and the senior laced a stunning unassisted goal to essentially ice the match at Miander Park.

This was Pugin's third game-winner of 2026 (fifth goal overall), and AMU finished the half with one corner and two shots.

Up Next: Men's soccer has a three-game slate next week, beginning with a 5:30 p.m. road match versus Florida College on Sept. 29.
