FNU’s offense shines in 7-3 win over Florida Memorial

HIALEAH, Fla. (Sept. 19, 2026) — Florida National men's soccer (5-3-0) weathered a pair of lightning delays to garner an impressive 7-3 win over the Florida Memorial University Lions (1-4-1) Saturday night. The Conquistadors were led by a brace from Yosuke Shimizu and a one-goal, one-assist evening for star forward David Luque Rivero, captain Juan Pugin, and newcomer Pablo Goyet.

This was the second meeting between these cross-town rivals in 2026, as FMU took a 2-1 victory against the Conquistadors at Mialdner Park on Aug. 20. FNU was slightly delayed in getting its revenge against the Lions after poor weather conditions pushed back the start time by about 20 minutes.

FNU's highest-scoring game of 2026 got off to a less-than-ideal start, as the Conquistadors conceded a goal to FMU's Jared Arevalo less than four minutes into the match. Winger Frank Sanchez was able to string together a great pass to Arevalo and put FNU against the wall from the first whistle. Luckily for FNU, Luque Rivero squeezed in an unassisted equalizer before the second lightning delay of the evening descended upon Orange Bowl Field.

When play was finally allowed to continue in the 38th minute, Kylian Behem used a great touch from newcomer Kilian Mokamanede to give FNU its first lead of the ballgame. FNU was unstoppable in its attacking third, especially after FMU's center back Julian Restrepo was shown a red card in the 12th minute of the half. The Frenchman Goyet made it a 3-1 affair for the visiting team, finishing a pinpoint entry pass by Juan Pugin with 13 minutes left before halftime.

At the midway point, FNU led the shot race 7-5 and posted four corner kicks to FMU's three. Moreover, starting goalkeeper Ignacio Pacheco had one of his three saves in the opening 45.

The second half was an exceptional four-goal performance for the Conquistadors, kicked off by an unassisted score off the foot of Alex Tabachnikov. Shimizu made his presence known with back-to-back goals assisted by Goyet and Luque Rivero, respectively, in the 55th and 57th minutes.

With the score at 6-1, Pugin posted the final Conquistador goal of the evening in the 63rd minute. Pacheco conceded another goal to FMU's Vicente Silva before being relieved of his duties for the night by veteran Vitor Caetano Pedrosa. The senior from Brazil ended the match with a save and a goal allowed after Sanchez made it a final score of 7-3.

This was FNU's first win against the Lions since 2023 and ties its largest margin of victory against the South Florida HBCU.
