Lightning Luque: Florida National dominates USSU in 4-0 rout

FAIRHOPE, Ala. (Aug. 28, 2026) — Conquistador men's soccer (1-2-0) saw its star forward shine brightly in a 4-0 win over the United States Sports University Eagles (0-1-0) Friday. David Luque Rivero was all over the pitch for two assists and a brace, securing FNU its first win over a Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) opponent in 2026.

FNU left no doubt about their hunger to score from the opening whistle, using Juan Pugin's second goal of 2026 to take a lead in the first minute. Luque Rivero and Michael Olszewski combined in the passing game to set up the shot by Pugin, leaving the Eagles off balance for the remainder of the match. FNU posted 13 shots in the first half, forcing five saves for goalkeeper Chris Ramirez.

But even a solid performance from Ramirez was not enough to keep Luque off the board in the first. The Spanish forward earned two goals in the first, one unassisted in the 34th minute and another on a pass by Mateo Limardo with under two minutes left in the half. FNU goalkeeper Vitor Caetano Pedrosa saw very little action on his side of the pitch, ending the period with one save on three shots faced.

FNU put the finishing touches on its 4-0 shutout win with a masterful goal by Dylan Robert Ray Frank Gibbs in the 86th. Notably, Riku Yasuda and Luque were credited with the assist on the Gibbs goal (his first of 2026) as FNU added 10 more shots to its team total. Caetano ended his first clean sheet of 2026 with three saves as Santiago Martinez, Pugin and Diego Alejandro Zogbi Tirado were each assessed yellow cards in the second half.

Up Next: Men's Soccer hits the interstate once more on Sept. 3 for a 6 p.m. battle against newcomers Florida Polytechnic University.
