Conquistadors hold off late surge from Lions in 3-1 win over FMU

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (Aug. 25, 2026) — Florida National volleyball (2-4) recorded its second win through six matches in 2026, defeating the Florida Memorial University Lions (0-5), 3-1 on the road. The Conquistadors claimed an early 2-0 lead before splitting the final two games of the match to exit its first primetime game victorious.

In the first of four close sets at the FMU Wellness Center, the Conquistadors grabbed a 1-0 match advantage in a 25-21 win against a much improved FMU squad. Carolina Goncalves had one of her best starts, posting four kills including the closing point of the set. Pelin Alci was involved early with eight assists, as FNU was able to hold off an FMU team that recorded 10 kills to FNU's nine.

Set two was another close frame with both teams evenly matched throughout the action of the game. Chriselle Ferdinand and newcomer Diana Stetsko combined for seven of FNU's 11 terminations. Along with a churning offense, FMU was held to a match-low eight kills, eventually falling 25-22 on a pair of bad sets by Heaven Crouse.

Despite trailing two sets, FMU extended the match with a thunderous 25-22 win in game three. Serena Edwards was the hero of the set with her third kill of the third forcing a fourth frame. FMU posted 13 kills as a team and held a high-powered FNU attacking group to ten kills and seven errors (.075).

The Conquistadors looked to wrap up their second win of 2026 in the fourth, using 11 kills (four from Ferdinand) to claim a well-earned win on the road. Notably, Goncalves' ninth kill and final kill of the match put her team up 21-16 before FMU called a timeout. FMU continued to push back, however, forcing a much-needed FNU timeout with the score standing at 24-22 before Ferdinand's perfect attack signaled the end of the match.

Ferdinand paced her team with 15 of the Conquistadors' 42 kills, while Alci posted 34 assists. Senior Ariana Long grabbed another match with double-digit digs (12), as Stetsko, Ferdinand and Sara Lizano Joya earned one solo block apiece.

Up Next: Florida National takes the rest of the week off, setting its sights on a Sept.3 road-thriller against Ave Maria University. The first serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. from Ave Maria, Fla.
