Volleyball fizzles out after strong start, falls to No. 14 STU 3-0

HIALEAH, Fla. (Aug. 21, 2026) — Conquistador volleyball (1-4) dropped its second match this season against a ranked team in the NAIA Coaches' Poll, falling 3-0 to No. 14 St. Thomas University (4-1) Friday at Bucky Dent Park.

Both of these Florida programs started 2026 at The Keiser Summer Classic last weekend, with St. Thomas losing just one of their four games in West Palm Beach, Fla. FNU exited their bracket with a big 3-2 win over Goshen to stomp out a three-game losing skid. 

The Bobcats picked up right where they left off in Hialeah, Fla., fighting off an early surge by FNU to take set one 25-14. FNU commanded a 6-2 lead, thanks to kills from Pelin Alci, Grace Leffler, Chriselle Ferdinand, and Camila Polanco, before being worn down by a strong defense from the Bobcats' front line.

Notably, STU's Raya Mlyakova had four of her eight kills in the first game, and back-to-back attacks by Leffler and Ferdinand that went past the lines ended the set.

In set two, STU returned to form to jump to a 19-11 lead on a kill by Ana Clara Valentim do Vale. FNU had trouble getting the ball in play with eight service errors in the match and three in the second. Ferdinand was a true bright spot for FNU in the second, posting six kills in the 25-19 loss.

The final frame was a display of the Bobcats' blocking ability, with the visiting team earning three assisted blocks in the frame. STU's Mia Laursen rattled off four of her 12 match kills to close out the Conquistadors' first home match of 2026.

Ferdinand paced the team with 11 kills, while sophomore Leffler impressed with five. Current Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) Defender of the Week, Ariana Long, was once against stout with 10 digs, as CAC Setter of the Week Alci earned 19 assists.

Up Next: Florida National meets another Sun Conference school next Tuesday at 7 p.m., making the short trip to Florida Memorial University in Miami Gardens, Fla.
