FNU exits West Palm with comeback win over Goshen

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (Aug. 15, 2026) — The Conquistadors (1-3) exited their first of three regular season tournaments in 2026, losing 3-0 to RV Taylor University (1-2) and defeating Goshen College (0-4), 3-2 in a five-set thriller.

Against the visiting Taylor Trojans, Florida National faced another early start with an 8 a.m. match and trailed 17-9 in the first on a kill by Reagan Kleiman. Three consecutive attack errors for FNU from Carolina Goncalves (2) and Sara Lizano Joya (1) earned the Trojans a crucial 1-0 match advantage. In the second, Taylor's attacking percentage jumped to .419, giving the Trojans a match high of 16 kills.

Meanwhile, the Conquistadors were held to just seven successful terminations in the second as Goncalves and Chriselle Ferdinand posted two apiece in the 25-13 loss. Ruth Anderson's sixth kill of the second frame was enough to force both teams to switch sides ahead of game three. Taylor exited victorious in the third, 25-13, behind four kills from Anderson and a lackluster offensive performance from the Conquistadors. FNU ended the final game with just four kills and a .056 hitting percentage.

Notably, Pelin Alci had a solid contest with seven assists and ten digs. Goncalves paced the team with six of FNU's 16 kills in the loss.

Against Goshen, Florida National's attack held its own early despite a 25-19 loss in set one. The Conquistadors claimed a 7-5 set lead on a kill by Goncalves and an attack error by Railynn Bowman. Goshen eventually climbed it way back with kills by Carmin Corey and Ava Schneider down the stretch.

In set two, FNU dropped its fifth consecutive game of the morning, 25-26, behind 15 kills from the Leafs. The Conquistadors were once again held to a less-than-ideal hitting percentage (.200) and could not capitalize on multiple service errors from the team out of Indiana.

Florida National was able to turn things around in the third, finding a rhythm on offense to command 25-17 and 25-12 victories in frames three and four. Ferdinand was a big part of this momentum shift in the third, posting five kills in the third, while Lizano Joya also got in on the action with six kills of her own to overwhelm a sputtering Leaf defense.

In the fourth, Goshen racked up six attacking errors by crucial players, while Alejandra Gonzalez Perez's service game midway helped FNU stay ahead 17-7. Camila Polanco's third kill of the fourth forced the winner-take-all fifth set of the match.

The frame was as close as a set could get, with FNU taking a timeout after Goshen cut the Conquistadors' lead to 14-13. The Leafs tied things up out of the break on a kill by Armani Guidry-Austin, but it was met by Ferdinand's seventeenth kill of the match. It was tremendous back-to-back kills by Lizano Joya that finally put the match to rest, sending Goshen home with a 0-4 record in West Palm Beach, Fla.

Alci led her team with 31 assists, while Ferdinand (17) and Lizano Joya (14) combined for 31 of FNU's 53 kills.

Up Next: Volleyball has its home opener set for Aug. 21 against No. 14-ranked St. Thomas University. First serve will commence at noon from Bucky Dent Park.
