Volleyball finds promising offensive momentum in KU Summer Classic

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (Aug. 14, 2026) — Florida National volleyball (0-2) was back in business for the first time in 2026, taking on the defending national champions Indiana Wesleyan University (0-1) and Sun Conference standouts Southeastern University (1-0). FNU battled fiercely against the Wildcats before falling in three sets and met a similar fate in an equally riveting 3-0 loss to the Fire.

In game one, FNU was electric to start a head-to-head against the No. 4-ranked team in the country, boasting a 6-4 lead on a kill by Sara Lizano Joya early in the first. Both teams traded blows before IWU went on an 8-3 run backed by reception errors by FNU and kills from IWU's Marin Sanchez and Shae Williams. Sanchez was huge to close out the opener, grabbing two of her team's final points in the frame.

The second saw IWU take a commanding 2-0 lead in a 25-9 victory. FNU had just seven kills in 27 attempts, allowing 14 kills and a .609 hitting percentage for the visiting Wildcats. Notably, Joya grabbed four of her 11 kills in the game during the second but saw her team's second set end on a kill by Jaycee Folkers.

In the final game, IWU earned a 12-5 lead midway and claimed the match on an Aubree Deshetsky kill to end the set 25-18. Pelin Alci led the team with 19 assists while senior Ariana Long paced her group with 15 digs.

Against Southeastern, FNU lost the opening two frames in 25-23 fashion and were unable to maintain leads in either set. SEU managed to score 16 kills in the first and held FNU's high-powered offense to 11. Laura Bonomi and Joyce Crosby combined for the final two kills of the first, while Bonomi's ninth and tenth kills of the afternoon closed out another close second set.

In the final game of the afternoon, five kills from Marina Santos was enough for the Fire to end FNU's first day in West Palm Beach, Fla., 25-11. Chriselle Ferdinand paced the team with 10 kills to go along with her nine digs. Long was once again all over the floor defensively with 11 digs (a team high), while Alci was once again instrumental at orchestrating the offense with 17 assists.

Up Next: FNU falls to the bronze bracket of the Keiser Summer Classic, taking on two teams from Pool D tomorrow starting at 8 a.m.
