Gazzillo shines in South Carolina

SUMTER, South Carolina (April 9, 2026) — Florida National baseball (20-16) had its first loss against conference foe Morris College (8-12) since 2024, splitting a two-game afternoon in Sumter, South Carolina. FNU was victorious in game one, 10-2, behind Gino Gazzillo's home run, before falling 5-2.

FNU now stands at 11-2 all-time against the Hornets of Morris College and snapped its longest win streak in this Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) match-up (seven).

Game one was a show of offensive brilliance by the visiting Conquistadors, posting seven RBIs on seven hits. Dwayne Dabian and Kanjiro Fujita each had two hits in the win, while Christopher Rivera and Gazzillo had a team-high two RBIs apiece. Gazzillo's second home run this season came off a pitch from MC's starter Levy, while runner Kylan Bolick exited the game with two stolen bases.

Pitcher Braden Parmley was efficient through four innings, allowing one run and collecting six strikeouts. Brandon Saunders had his first save of 2026, going for the three frames with just one run scored.

MC was able to regroup in game two, commanding a five-run lead heading into the seventh. MC used just one pitcher for six innings, McKnight, and the starter got the job done with two strikeouts and three walks.

For FNU, errors from the infield (Jesus Sosa and Bolick) were costly early on, despite the Conquistadors tallying six hits to the Hornets' seven. Fujita and Gazzillo scored doubles in the loss, while hits from Bolick, Gazzillo and Fausto Sanchez forced in a runner apiece before the seventh came to a close.

FNU's Cole Philips picked up his sixth loss but claimed six strikeouts and just one earned run. Relief pitcher Alexander Newman went for two innings and ended the afternoon with a strikeout and no earned runs.

Up Next: Baseball looks for the series win tomorrow with a noon doubleheader against MC.
