FNU comes up short in a pair of close games to PBA Sailfish

WESTON, Fla. (April 6, 2026) — Florida National softball (20-13) exited Vista Park Monday with a thrilling, near-upset 7-6 defeat in an exhibition against the Palm Beach Atlantic University Sailfish (11-25) before falling 3-2 the following contest. Florida National is now 0-6 against PBA since the 2024 season.

FNU's exhibition was packed with drama as both teams entered extra innings tied at 1-1. PBA scored first with a sacrifice fly out by Larken Maseda in the third, and FNU responded in the fourth on a full-count single by first baseman Alisha Lanyon to run in catcher Alyssa Julien. The PBA offense came alive in the eighth, however, scoring four runs on a Holly Frankl base hit, a sacrifice bunt delivered by Kierea Smits and an RBI double by Addley Dean. The Conquistador infield seemed a bit thrown off by PBA's short game, committing the game's lone error in the eighth.

This was a short-lived triumph for the visiting Sailfish as FNU tied things up once more on an RBI single by Julien and a stellar home run by third baseman Gianna Hall deep into left field. Despite its efforts, FNU ran out of answers after a two-score double by Dianna Montidoro put PBA over the top. Diana Anda ran in Lanyon with a base hit in the bottom of the frame, but the home team could not muster another run on pitcher Rylee Little.

Game two was another one-score deadlock after one inning, thanks to an RBI single by Larken and a sacrifice fly by Hall. Montidoro was huge once again for PBA, posting an RBI double to give her team the lead before Anda's double scored Lanyon in the fourth. Unfortunately for FNU, PBA's pinch hitter Brianna Cabrera hit a ball high and away to left field to score Larken in the seventh before Julien struck out in the bottom of the inning to close out the action in Weston, Fla.

Sophia White and Brunella Beteta split duties from the circle in both games, with Beteta picking up the loss with five hits allowed and one run. White pitched the first three innings and had a team-high three strikeouts.

Up Next: Top-ranked Keiser comes to Vista Park for a noon doubleheader against the Conquistadors April 8.
