Baseball ends 2026 with seven-game losing slump

OAKLAND PARK, Fla. (April 26, 2026) — Conquistador baseball (22-23) had another tough break against the University of Fort Lauderdale Eagles (32-11), allowing a combined 40 hits in 17-5 and 22-13 losses Saturday. FNU led 13-10 in the seventh inning of game two but allowed 12 unanswered runs through the final two frames.

Florida National's 12-run loss in game one saw UFTL jump to an 11-4 lead after three innings. The Eagle defense allowed one score the remainder of the contest, as pitcher Luis De Los Santos earned his sixth win of 2026. Antonio Guzman grabbed the loss, allowing eight earned runs across home plate before his night was over. Guzman, Brendan Ford, Dailyn Bonevil, Luke Voelker and Kaden Varnadoe each had a strikeout from the mound.

Offensively, seniors Cesar Mora and Fausto Sanchez posted two-for-three performances from the dish while Abel Gutierrez and James Snyder (two doubles) went two-for-four.

Game two saw FNU get in the swing of things and climb back from a 10-6 deficit in the sixth for a 13-10 lead heading into the seventh. FNU used an explosive seven-score, bottom-sixth performance but failed to keep UFTL off the board. The Eagles tied the game in the seventh, kept FNU scoreless in the bottom of the seventh, and rattled off nine runs in the eighth to call it a day in Oakland Park, Fla.

Seven different pitchers took the mound for FNU, with closer Evan Dalmau taking over the seventh and Erik Fuentes earning the loss on six runs and five hits allowed. As far as hitting, senior Ben Shaffer was nearly undeniable with three hits in four at-bats. Gutierrez, Sanchez, Mora (one home run), Dwayne Dabian and Alejandro De Armas posted two hits apiece.

FNU's 0-4 weekend against UFTL extended their losing streak against UFTL to 0-19 in as many meetings (2-29 all-time).

Up Next: Baseball will take on Westcliff University to open the CAC Tournament next Wednesday.
