FNU shows toughness in back-to-back one-run wins over Carolina

HIALEAH, Fla. (March 27, 2026) — Florida National baseball (17-12) bounced back from a mid-week loss with a pair of huge conference triumphs at Ernest R. Graham Park Friday. FNU held off a hot Carolina University Bruins team (14-19) in game one, 5-4, before earning a comeback 6-5 victory in game two.

To start things off in Hialeah, Fla., designated hitter Alejandro De Armas rocketed FNU to a 2-0 lead with a homer to centerfield in the first. Leadoff hitter Jesus Sosa followed up the freshman's brilliance with an RBI double in the second, and a one-score groundout to the Bruins' shortstop by Gino Gazzillo ran in Christopher Rivera to make it a 4-0 ball game.

FNU's advantage was severed in half, however, thanks to a two-score double off the bat of Peyton Horn in the sixth. The Conquistadors responded in the bottom of the frame, with Rivera connecting on a hit to easily run in Abel Gutierrez. Notably, Rivera went four-for-four from the dish for two runs scored.

To close out the game, FNU survived RBI singles by Nathan Wesley and Danny Gonzalez, with Nicholas Gioia taking care of business on the mound for his first save of the season. Gioia tallied two strikeouts while starter Braden Parmley went 5.2 innings for four strikeouts and just two earned runs.

Game two was more of a slow burn for the home team, as CU jumped to a 2-0 lead in the second. Carolina's Chandler Smithart grabbed an RBI sacrifice fly to left in the inning, and Daniel Isbell blasted a two-base knock through the left side hole for another Bruin run.

A Gutierrez single in the second and a double by Rivera in the third leveled the game at 2-2, but CU went ahead with three unanswered runs in the fourth and sixth innings. In the seventh, FNU was finally able to pull away as relief pitcher Abraham Leal struggled to keep FNU off the field. Rivera got things started with his second double of the afternoon to run in Sosa, while pinch-hitter Kanjiro Fujita grabbed an RBI walk to force in runner Justyn Lang.

To cap off the comeback, Gutierrez put into play a hard-hit ground ball that was mishandled by the Bruins' infield, allowing Kylan Bolick and Rivera to give FNU another walk-off win at Graham Park. Caleb Lambdin, the sixth FNU pitcher to take the mound in game two, posted his first win of the 2026 season with a clutch strikeout in the seventh.

Up Next: Baseball looks to conquer the series against the Bruins tomorrow with two games starting at noon.
