Baseball splits final games against Carolina at home

HIALEAH, Fla. (March 28, 2026) — Florida National baseball (18-13) went 1-1 in a Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) doubleheader Saturday, posting a 21-2 loss in game one to the Carolina University Bruins (15-20) before fighting back for a 6-5 win in game two. Second baseman Kylan Bolick came up big with a sacrifice fly in the eighth to end an eventful day at Ernest R Graham Park.

Game one was a tied ball game through the first inning, with Gino Gazzillo evening things out with a one-run shot to right field that landed him safely at first base. A Leland Brown single in the first put the Bruins ahead 1-0 before Gazzillo's hit, but the Bruins would not have to wait long for an answer on offense. The Bruins recorded a masterful 15-run inning in the third, keeping their runners moving along the bases with great ease.

CU's spectacular third inning featured six RBI singles to go along with 10 Bruin hits. Four different FNU pitchers took the mound to try and stop the bleeding, with Aliozmany Alonzo and Brendan Ford coming up with the three outs needed to move the game along. Sosa was the last player for the home team to run in a batter, scoring Jose Palencia on a sacrifice fly out to left in the fourth. The Bruins went on to score five more runs in the sixth and seventh innings, highlighted by a solo home run by Chandler Smithart.

Starter Cole Philips picked up the loss from the bump, but grabbed five strikeouts with three walks awarded.

Game two was a much-needed change of pace for the Conquistadors, going up 2-0 in the second on a double by first baseman Ben Shaffer. Shaffer later made it a three-run inning for the Conquistadors, scoring on a wild pitch by Kolden Hunter. Both teams added one run in the fourth, as CU scored one batter on a hit by Brooks and Fausto Sanchez connected on the lone FNU home run of the afternoon in the bottom of the frame.

To their credit, CU posted a huge four-run fifth to take the lead, 5-4. Ty Vespe and Brown both scored RBI doubles while Nathan Wesley tripled for the final run of the frame. Relief pitcher Nicholas Gioia was critical down the stretch to calm the Bruins offensively, ending his eventual second win of the 2026 season with four strikeouts and two hits allowed.

FNU's hitters took care of the rest, using Bolick's score on a wild pitch in the seventh and a sacrifice fly from the substitute to walk off its second of four games this weekend.

Up Next: Florida National meets UFTL next Tuesday for a 6:30 p.m. contest out of Oakland Park, Fla.
