Conquistadors drop series in winless doubleheader Saturday

VIERA, Fla. (March 14, 2026) — Florida National (15-11) faced a tough evening in Viera, Fla., after dropping back-to-back Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) games to the Fisher College Falcons (4-11). FNU allowed 27 Falcons hits through both contests and a six-run ninth inning in the first game to fall 16-9 before losing game two, 12-7.

To get things started on the Space Coast, Fisher jumped to a 4-0 lead in the first behind a John Batista home run and RBI signals by Daniel Peralta and Angel Feliz. FNU finally broke through in the third with RBI base hits by Gino Gazzillo and DH Alejandro De Armas. With the score at 4-2, Batista went to work for a three-run double in the fourth before runs by Abel Gutierrez and Oscar Orta cut the Fisher lead to 7-4.

To its credit, FNU got great production in the fifth, with home runs from James Snyder and De Armas highlighting a five-run inning to tie the game at nine runs apiece. Unfortunately, Fisher was great at getting the ball in play and their runners moving. FC iced the game with three RBI singles in the top of the ninth.

Five pitchers took the mound for FNU, with Alexander Newman picking up the loss. Newman paced the team with four strikeouts, with starter Antonio Guzman and Scott Hiller posting three Ks from the mound.

Game two was another dominant showing for the visiting Falcons, who jumped to a 9-0 lead through the first three frames. Fisher tallied eight hits in the first three innings before FNU made it a more manageable 9-6 affair with huge third and fourth inning performances by Christopher Rivera and Gazzillo. Gazzillo homered to left field in the fourth while Rivera delivered a two-RBI single in the third and a one-run double in the fourth.

FC was able to keep FNU at bay with a pair of RBI base hits off Kevin Cancel and Maxwell Urena's bats in the fifth and sixth, respectively. Cole Philips picked up the loss after 1.1 innings on the mound. Brandon Saunders and Nicholas Gioia posted five total strikeouts while Caleb Lambdin and Brendan Ford took care of the game's final 1.2 innings.
