Florida National sweeps day two versus the BUF Eagles

HIALEAH, Fla. (Feb. 7, 2026) — Florida National baseball (3-1) mounted a stellar comeback in the sixth and seventh innings of its second game of the afternoon opposite the Baptist University of Florida Eagles (1-3) to claim a 3-1 series win. Outfielder Fausto Sanchez, designated hitter Alejandro De Armasshortstop Jesus Sosa and pitcher Alexander Newman did their part to complete a 7-6 triumph after FNU claimed game one by a score of 4-3.

FNU and BUF were locked in a scoreless match before De Armas forced in Sosa on a single to left field in the bottom of the third for the game's first run. The Eagles responded with a sacrifice fly by Zane Alford, which gave Ivan Membreno enough time to dash home from third base. De Armas continued to wreak havoc on BUF's pitchers, blasting a thrilling three-RBI home run in the fifth to put FNU up 4-1.

The Eagles made things interesting in the sixth with a home run of their own by Bryan Calderon to put themselves within one run heading to the bottom of the sixth. Luckily for FNU, they got the game-sealing out with a popup to third baseman Abel Gutierrez. Julio Amoedo grabbed his first win of the 2026 season with seven strikeouts and one earned run. Evan Dalmau was clutch in the final frame to pick up the save, collecting two outs and allowing one hit.

Game two saw Baptist University of Florida command an early 6-0 lead behind a base-clearing double from Cale Barnes, a pair of unearned runs off a fielding error by Christopher Rivera in the third, and an RBI single up the middle of the field by Korbin Odom.

FNU finally came alive in the sixth to tie the game with a six-run frame. Ben Shaffer scored an RBI single in the inning before advancing to third on a wild pitch that scored outfielder Noe Davila. Shaffer made the trip to home plate after a home run from Fausto Sanchez made it a 6-4 affair, and Sosa followed up with a home run of his own in FNU's next at-bat. De Armas was as timely as it gets for a designated hitter, getting on base and pushing in the tying run from Oscar Orta. Defensively, Newman and FNU did their job at the top of the seventh, holding BUF scoreless through three hitters.

With back-to-back outs to start the bottom of the seventh by Jorge Barba and Davila, Sanchez stepped up with a ton of confidence after garnering a homer in his last trip. The left fielder connected on a beautiful homer to left center field before being doused with water at home plate by a jubilant FNU dugout commemorating the team's first walk-off win in 2026.

Newman's first win in an FNU uniform was highlighted by four strikeouts and zero runs allowed through 4.1 innings on the pitcher's mound.

Up Next: FNU travels to New Port Richey, Fla., for a doubleheader versus New College of Florida Feb. 11.
