Conquistadors open 2026 with close losses in Miami Gardens

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (Feb. 3, 2026) — Florida National softball (0-2) delivered a pair of competitive games against the NAIA's No. 18-ranked St. Thomas University Bobcats (4-0). Despite an early lead in game one and a late push in game two, the Conquistadors exited Tuesday's season opener two runs short of a win on a cold, windy night.

To kick off 2026, FNU faced a tough STU squad fresh off surviving two games versus Grand View University, a top-25 NAIA in its own right. The Conquistadors got off to a great start thanks to a three-strike inning from pitcher Sophia White. Following this performance from the circle, FNU's Isabella Silva ran in newcomer Diana Anda with a sacrifice fly to center. FNU's lead doubled thanks to a ground ball to short by Alissia Vega, which gave Madisyn Garduno enough time to stride safely to home plate.

FNU washing STU pitcher Johana Magaldi struggled to find the strike zone, and the Conquistadors worked the box for six walks over the transfer's 4.2 innings. The Bobcats, however, would not stay off the board long, scoring their first run on an RBI double from Mya Achenbach in the third inning.

The Conquistadors regained a two-score advantage with an RBI double from catcher Alyssa Julien in the fourth but would go on to outscore 4-0 in the fifth and sixth frames. Achenbach made it a 3-2 affair with her second RBI of the day on a two-base hit in the fifth before a one-score double from Alondra Lozada, and an RBI single off the bat of Giada Acanfora sealed the game for the home team.

White ended the afternoon with three strikeouts while Julien had the best outing from the batter's box with two hits on four trips.

Game two was less of an offensive affair with the Bobcats securing a 2-0 lead in the third. Sydnee Fordham was responsible for the first STU run of the game with an RBI single to centerfield, and she later scored an unearned run off former Conquistador Emma Edward's double to centerfield.

Lainie Schroeder capitalized on an error from STU's infield to make it a 2-1 ball game in the fifth, but game two pitcher Brunella Beteta allowed a home run from game-one hero Achenbach in the fifth that put STU ahead, with opportunities running out for the visiting Conquistadors. STU ended the evening on a 53 groundout on Vega, as FNU is now winless in their last eight meetings against STU.

Beteta posted three strikeouts and two earned runs in the loss, while FNU tallied three hits and one error.

Up Next: Florida National is back on the clay Feb. 6 in Babson Park, Fla., against Webber International, starting at 12 p.m.
