Baseball left with no answers in losses to FMU Lions

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (Feb. 26, 2026) — Florida National baseball (8-7) suffered two losses on the road against The Sun Conference's Florida Memorial University Lions (5-5) on Thursday. FNU was shut out 6-0 in game one and fell 10-1 in game two, moving its overall record against the Lions to 4-15.

Game one was a slow and steady affair where FMU was able to post just a two-score lead through the first three innings thanks to an RBI groundout by Don McKnight III and an RBI fielder's choice by Wilber Puertas. Starter Antonio Guzman was solid through 5.2 innings with eight strikeouts and held FMU to just two runs before the sixth rolled around.

The Lions scored through the last three innings of the ball game and grabbed their fourth run of the game on a sacrifice fly by Ray Sobrino. Shortstop Nathan Martinez and Gregory Leal added to their team's advantage with an RBI hit and a double in the sixth and seventh, respectively. Brandon Saunders had taken over pitching duties for Guzman and ended the game with a strikeout and two earned runs.

FMU's Wade Francis was stellar from the mound with nine strikeouts through nine frames. Alejandro De Armas, Cesar Mora, and Dwayne Dabian had one hit apiece in the loss.

Game two was all FMU from start to finish, as Don McKnight and Justin Martinez had back-to-back home runs in the second for five RBIs. Their impressive hitting gave FMU a 10-1 lead, nullifying FNU's lone score of the afternoon by Christopher Rivera on an error from game two shortstop Daniel Lopez.

Before FMU's home run derby, the Lions went up 5-0 in the first, posting seven earned runs on pitcher Julio Amoedo. Keorden Leito, Scott Hiller and Jose Chavez shared FNU's pitching responsibilities for the rest of the afternoon, with Chavez grabbing a game-high two strikeouts.

Up Next: FNU ends its time in Miami Gardens, Fla., with a noon doubleheader versus the Lions tomorrow.
