Two FNU home runs highlight a 1-1 afternoon in Miami Gardens

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (Feb. 27, 2026) — Conquistador baseball (9-8) grabbed an impressive 7-5 win in the second of two games against the Florida Memorial University (6-6) Lions Friday. Ben Shaffer and Fausto Sanchez posted home runs, as FNU recorded 13 hits through both games to end the series 1-3.

Game one was a 14-4 run-rule win for the Lions behind a 10-strikeout performance from pitcher Esteban Jogins. Despite Jogins' five-inning heater, FNU was able to get on the board first with Sanchez's home run in the third, but fell behind 3-1 on a three-run home run bomb by Nathan Martinez. James Snyder made it a 3-2 affair with a single to left field, but FMU roared with a 9-0 run through the fourth and fifth frames.

FMU's offensive tear was highlighted by a two-run homer from Ray Sobrino, and FNU grabbed a couple more runs in the sixth and seventh on an RBI double by Sanchez and a one-run single by Davila. Notably, starting pitcher Braden Parmley grabbed five strikeouts in 2.2 innings despite the loss.

Game two was a great showing for the Conquistadors, ending this late-week series on a high note. Shaffer was the star of the show, going two-for-three from the batter's box with five RBIs. Shaffer's two-RBI single in the first got FNU its first lead of the contest and preceded a two-run double by catcher Kanjiro Fujita. FMU found its first run at the bottom of the frame on a sacrifice fly by Justin Martinez to score Pheron Charlton.

With the score sitting at 4-1 in FNU's favor, Shaffer changed the course of the game with an absolute bomb to left field to make it a seven-run evening for the visiting Conquistadors. FNU's pitching was able to close out the remainder of the match, helped by a four-inning, four-strikeout showing by starter Cole Philips. Notably, with two runners on in the bottom of the seventh, Evan Dalmau posted the save after Damarion Butler flew out to center field to end the game.

This was FNU's first win versus FMU since February 2023, snapping a seven-game losing streak.

Up Next: FNU hits the road for four games in Augusta, Ga., versus Paine College and Mid-Atlantic Christian March 6 and 7.
