Conquistadors exit Daphne with a 3-2 win in split outing

DAPHNE, Ala. (Feb. 15, 2026) — Florida National (5-5) departed a four-game series opposite the United States Sports University Eagles (4-2) with a 3-2 victory before conceding seven runs in the bottom of the seventh to fall 12-9 in game two.

Game one was a highlight of FNU's trip to Alabama, as a five-strikeout performance from starting pitcher Antonio Guzman kept FNU in front against a high-powered Eagle offense. The Conquistadors gardner its second win this week after a three-score second inning. Third baseman Abel Gutierrez forced an error from USSU's outfield and allowed Alejandro De Armas to steal home for the first run of the afternoon. Gutierrez made his own trip across home plate thanks to a single from Jesus Sosa in the frame before an error from shortstop Cory Parker made it a three-run Conquistador advantage.

USSU Kade Wall's RBI fielder's choice in the bottom of the second threatened FNU's lead, but it wasn't until the sixth that a double from Evan Jacob made it a 3-2 ball game. Guzman's stellar pitching was crucial during this run, and relief righty Evan Dalmau pitched the final two innings to earn a pair of strikeouts and just two hits allowed.

Game two had all the dramatics of a USCAA matchup, with FNU entering the bottom of the seventh with a 9-5 lead on the brink of a sweep before USSU rattled off seven runs of their own in the bottom of the frame for the walk-off win. The Eagles had previously erased a 6-0 FNU lead in game two the previous day and were not discouraged in their search for a comeback Sunday.

Home runs were a popular occurrence in game two, with Cesar Mora, De Armas and Ben Shaffer going yard in the fifth and seventh, respectively. Shaffer's three-RBI shot put FNU ahead 6-5 before Christopher Rivera blasted a three-run homer of his own to cap off a massive seventh inning that gave FNU a four-run lead, needing just three outs to call game.

Unfortunately, USSU was finding success no matter who was on the bump for Florida National. FNU's staff of Dalmau, Keorden Leito and Cole Philips all saw action in the seventh but were methodically handled by RBI singles from Napoleon Colston and Dominick Hartman, along with a costly one-score double up the middle by Coby Parker.

Hartman's single leveled the game at nine runs apiece, and in storybook fashion, pinch hitter Daniel Howell connected on the Eagles' second home run of the day, clearing the two runners already on board to walk it off for the home team.

Up Next: FNU hosts the Bryant & Stratton College Syracuse Bobcats Wednesday for a noon doubleheader.
