Baseball falls to USSU Eagles on the road

DAPHNE, Ala. (Feb. 14, 2026) — Florida National (4-4) faced a bittersweet Valentine's Day, suffering two losses to the United States Sports University Eagles (3-1) on Saturday. FNU was defeated in game one 8-5 and saw its 6-0 lead in game two disappear in the wake of a 9-6 defeat after five innings.

Game one against the Eagles was a hot start for FNU's first baseman, Christopher River, after posting a double to left field to run in Jesus Sosa in the first. Outfielder Noe Davila kept things rolling for the Conquistadors and James Snyder on a single through the left side of the field to put FNU up 2-0 heading to the second.

The Eagles responded with authority, recording a six-run second inning with three costly RBI singles by Napoleon Colsto, Daniel Howell and Dominick Hartman. USSU had excellent base running in the frame, picking up two runs on groundouts. Starting pitcher Braden Parmley conceded the lead despite four strikeouts and was pulled with one out remaining in the third for Edgar Santos.

Unfortunately, FNU could not produce a strong volume of runs to get back in contention and was only able to score two more times before USSU iced the game at the top of the seventh. Notably, Davila scored Rivera in the fifth with an RBI single up the middle, while an error from the Eagle center fielder, Colston, scored Fausto Sanchez for the unearned run in the sixth. USSU was unfazed, however, with two more runs posted in the fifth and sixth.

The sequel to this USCAA matchup featured a six-run first inning for the Conquistadors, highlighted by RBI base hits by Alejandro De Armas and Cesar Mora. Mishaps from starting pitcher Will Watts allowed a Conquistador run on a walk with the bases loaded for Snyder and a hit by pitch to score Rivera. The opening frame had it all for FNU's lineup, as Dwayne Dabian showed off his skills with a sacrifice bunt for third baseman Abel Gutierrez.

Watts was soon replaced on the bump by Jakson Stewart, and the relief pitcher got his team out of the jam by capturing the final two outs of the inning. To its credit, USSU did not flinch, facing a hefty early disadvantage, scoring nine unanswered runs before rain called the game early after the fifth came to a close.

The Eagles were steady in the first with a pair of runs scored on an error from Snyder and a wild pitch by Julio Amoedo. In the second, Colston used an RBI fielder's choice to run in Kade Wall, while Cory Parker was excellent with a two-score single up the middle in the fourth before Colston made it home on a wild pitch by Cole Philips to make it a 7-6 USSU lead. A two-score triple by Braden Braud gave the Eagles an even bigger cushion with the impending downpour calling things early from the turf of Daphne, Ala.

Up Next: FNU and USSU meet once again tomorrow for a 1 p.m. doubleheader at the Daphne Sports Complex.
