FNU keeps things interesting in loss to No. 9-ranked St. Thomas

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (Oct. 29, 2026) — Florida National volleyball (7-15) grabbed impressive points in a 3-0 loss to the NAIA's No. 9-ranked St. Thomas University Bobcats (19-5). STU and FNU met earlier this season in August, when the Bobcats defeated FNU by the same score at Bucky Dent Park.

In the second iteration of this cross-town rivalry, STU and FNU posted a competitive 25-20 frame with STU garnering a slight edge with 13 kills to FNU's 10. The Conquistadors were great early, trailing just 7-4 on a service error by Victoria Vinals and went on a 5-3 run down the stretch of the frame. Sara Lizano Joya was a big part of this with three kills when her team needed it most, down 18-12, 24-17 and 24-18. Raya Mlyakova was finally able to capture the Bobcats' first set point on a kill set up by Payton Bertke.

Set two was a more dominant showing for the home team, holding FNU's offense to just seven kills while posting 14 terminations on the other end. Madelynn Coates was at the service line for STU's final five points of the frame, posting two service aces. Chriselle Ferdinand had two kills in the set despite her team trailing 17-8. Lizano Joya added two more kills to her total, but it was another kill for Mlyakova that made it a 2-0 STU match advantage.

The final game of the evening, STU's Micaela Velez put her team ahead 12-7 on her fourth kill of the night. The Bobcats went on an 11-7 run to end the match with a thunderous kill by Esther Bachere.

Ferdinand had four of her team-high eight kills in the final frame, as Pelin Alci ended the match with 17 of FNU's 23 assists. Senior Ariana Long had a typical strong defensive performance with 12 digs.
