Conquistadors best Bruins before suffering a 3-2 loss to Hesston Larks

HESSTON, Kan. (Oct. 10, 2026) — Conquistador volleyball (5-12) exited Hesston, Kan., with a win against the Carolina University Bruins (12-15), 3-1 and a hard-fought defeat at the hands of the Hesston College Larks (11-9), 3-2 Saturday.

FNU's final day in Kansas kicked off with a match against familiar foe, Carolina University. The Bruins were able to strike early with a 25-13 win in set one behind 15 kills and just two attacking errors. Florida National managed seven kills and an insurmountable eight attacking missteps to start the match trailing 1-0. Corinne Cutter's third kill of the set clinched the Bruin victory, but what followed was three dominant performances from the Conquistadors.

FNU began to turn things around with a much-needed 25-22 win in game two. Sophomore Chriselle Ferdinand was a big part of FNU's success and scored five kills in the second after posting zero in the first. Sara Lizano Joya was incredible in set two, helping her team go up 23-20 with back-to-back successful attacks. It was Diana Stetsko's fourth termination of the match that put FNU at that coveted 25-point marker and sent both teams to the opposite bench for frame three.

In the third and fourth, FNU was indomitable defensively and held the Bruins to 13 kills in the last two games. Senior Ariana Long undoubtedly impacted this brilliant run with 17 digs in the match, while FNU's hitters could not seem to miss, with 30 of their 58 kills coming in the third and fourth sets. Junior Pelin Alci kept FNU's offensive scheme moving with 45 of the Conquistadors' 54 assists in the victory. Notably, Ferdinand paced the team once again with 13 kills.

FNU's final match of the Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) Classic saw it pitted against tournament host Hesston College. Florida National is no stranger to coming back in a game down two sets, scoring two of its five wins this season in just that fashion. Yet, Saturday afternoon saw FNU on the wrong side of this comeback scenario, falling 3-2 to Hesston after 25-17 and 25-19 set wins to open the game.

Through the first two frames, FNU tallied an impressive 28 kills and allowed just 18 from the Larks to fuel a 2-0 match advantage. A Daviona Bernard service ace in the first and an attacking error by Addison Graves were the deciding points in the first and second, respectively. The third frame, however, saw the Larks turn things around in front of a home crowd. HC's Lydia Foster was a big part of this run with five of the Larks' 13 kills in the third.

The hits kept coming for FNU in the fourth frame, as HC earned a stunning 25-17 win to force a fifth set. FNU was held to nine kills in the fourth to go along with seven attacking errors. Ferdinand was responsible for three of those terminations, but FNU had no answer for five kills from Foster and an overall imposing offensive performance from the Larks. In the fifth and final frame, HC jumped to an 11-6 lead off a kill by Trinity Griffin and stayed off a 7-4 run from FNU down the stretch to end the match on top.

Ferdinand (21) and Stetsko (14) combined for 35 kills, while Alci had another strong game with 50 assists. Notably, Shady Mayer (19), Bernard (16) and Long (16) led the way with double-digit digs.

Up Next: FNU will make the short trip to Babson Park, Fla., for the Webber International University Tri-Match on Oct. 15.
