Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Brenda Bogle

Men’s basketball falls to FMU Lions

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (Jan. 5, 2026) — Florida National (4-8) had its fourth consecutive loss against the Florida Memorial University Lions (10-6) in 77-67 fashion, despite a very competitive battle on the court of the FMU Wellness Center Monday. FNU is now 1-4 in its last five countable contests, posting its third consecutive loss in a close matchup.

In the first 20 minutes of play, FNU relied heavily on 10 points from star guard Hasmar Francois and six crucial points from Cameron Johnson in 13 minutes off the bench. Ronald Fernandez was productive at the rim for eight points and two boards, but it was Johnson who led the rebounding race for FNU with four. After missing FNU's game against the College of the Ozarks, Gary Adams was back in the rotation with four quick points in a 2-4 performance from the field.

Despite these strong performances from their players, the Conquistadors trailed 42-34, thanks in part to 22 combined points from FMU from Cameron Noel and Jeffery Selden. The Lions were ahead by as many as 14 (36-22), and all five starters made an impact early in one form or another. Devin Carter came alive for nine points, three rebounds, and three assists. Braxton Lewis joined Carter as one of the only players in the game with a block.

Three-point shooting continued to be a struggle for FNU, as the Conquistadors were 2-8 from long range while FMU connected on six threes before halftime.

Florida National relied heavily on a collective effort from Coreem Hollingshead and Serge Beauvoir III, each posting five points in the second half. Houston Culpepper was also extremely effective, scoring six points in 11 minutes, shooting 75% from the floor. FMU's answer to FNU's rolling offense was nine from Selden and eight points courtesy of Aareyon Munir-Jones. The Lions were also on clean-up duty, outrebounding FNU 19-10 in the second.

Late in the second period, a clutch three from Beauvoir III made it just a 10-point affair with 3:22 on the clock, but FNU hit an unhelpful scoring drought until Francois's layup made it a 70-61 with 1:25 left. Both teams spent the remaining seconds of the game on the charity stripe, where FMU did just enough to hold off a relentless FNU squad on the road.

Francois led the way with 14 points, five rebounds and three assists. Fernandez and Johnson had 12 in the loss, while Culpepper ended the night with eight points on 4-7 shooting.

Up Next: The Conquistadors are set to take on two conference opponents at the CAC Classic hosted by Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence, Kansas, Jan. 16-17.
