Conquistadors fall behind late in loss to Larks

LAWRENCE, Kan. (Jan. 16, 2026) — Florida National (4-9) found itself on the wrong side of another close contest, this time against the Hesston College Larks (2-20). FNU was unable to stop a 24-9 run from the Larks in the final four minutes of the game, losing in its first taste of Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) basketball this season.

In the first half, both teams appeared evenly matched and went into the break deadlocked at 38. FNU relied on scoring from six different Conquistadors, while Hesston's Trent Thompson paced every player on the court with 14 points to go with nine rebounds and four assists. Florida National countered Thompson's offensive production with an eight-point and a seven-point first period from Ronald Fernandez and Serge Beauvoir III, respectively.

Both teams brought down 21 rebounds in the first and protected the ball well with six total turnovers. Jonathan Norman was a big part of FNU's ability to compete on the glass with six rebounds and six points in 13 minutes. Notably, Houston Culpepper posted five in the half and ended the night with 12 points, five rebounds and two assists.

When play resumed in the second half, FNU and the Larks appeared headed to overtime, as neither team was able to gain a clear advantage. The score sat leveled at 72 with 4:26 remaining, and the Larks' Brycten Harris kicked off his team's final charge with eight points in less than two minutes. Harris also managed to go 5-5 from the free-throw line during that stretch to help Hesston go up 80-74.

The three-ball seemed to abandon FNU, and the Conquistadors went 0-5 on their shots from long range during crunch time.

Hesston was able to end the game on the charity stripe with 10 easy points in the final two minutes and went 23-26 from the line in the half for its second win of 2025-26. FNU has now lost four straight games and stands 1-4 over its last five games.

Hasmar Francois led the way for FNU with 16 points, three rebounds and four assists before picking up five fouls. Fernandez posted 13 points and five rebounds while Beauvoir III earned four rebounds and 13 points in 24 minutes.
