FNU falls in competitive CAC battle to Carolina

NORTH MIAMI, Fla. (Jan. 30, 2026) — Florida National men's basketball (4-13) fell to a fellow Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) institution Friday, dropping a close game to the Carolina University Bruins (5-16). Cameron Johnson had a near double-double in a 70-65 heartbreaker at the Scott Galvin Community Center.

In the first half of this first-ever meeting between these two NAIA schools, both sides found themselves in a low-scoring affair with eight total turnovers in the opening 20 minutes of play. Florida National used a stellar three from Serge Beauvoir III in the closing seconds of the period to take a tentative 24-22 lead at the break. Johnson's hustle was on full display for FNU in the early going, as the senior posted six points and four rebounds in 15 minutes of play. The Conquistadors shot 30.3% from the floor in the first half, with Hasmar Francois' five points in the half helping to keep Carolina at bay.

CU was led by a stellar seven-point frenzy from Enock Rosil while the Bruins crashed the glass to outrebound FNU 23-18 heading into the second.

Both teams found their stride offensively in the second half, especially the Bruins, who shot 51.4% in the period. FNU was having trouble keeping pace early on and midway through the second, conceding an 11-point CU lead with 10:12 remaining in the game. Luckily, Johnson and Joshua Milla answered the call to keep their team in contention late. Milla rattled off eight points and brought down a rebound in 10 minutes on the court while Johnson took care of business in the final seconds of the game.

Johnson was a one-man show, delivering back-to-back steals and a pair of made layups (one an and-one) to bring FNU within one with 54 seconds left. But the Bruins turned to DJ Evans for crucial buckets at the rim and a foul by Francois put him at the charity stripe for the game-sealing free throws.

Johnson led the Conquistadors once again with 18 points, nine rebounds and two assists. Beauvoir III fought his way to eight points, one rebound and an assist while Gary Adams contributed eight off the bench.

Up Next: FNU is set for a game against Haskell Indian Nations University tomorrow at 10 a.m.
