Missed free throws prove to be the X-Factor in loss to Hornets

HIALEAH, Fla. (Jan. 24, 2026) — A late offensive rebound and a pair of made free throws by Jerry Couzens helped the Morris College Hornets (9-7) secure a 57-54 win over the Florida National University Conquistador (4-12). FNU's slump continues as they move to 1-7 over their last eight countable games and 0-4 against Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) opponents.

In the first half, both teams were unable to establish a clear advantage and headed into halftime deadlocked at 32. FNU relied heavily on an all-around performance from Cameron Johnson, who continues to find his stride in the starting lineup. The senior guard tallied a six-point, four-rebound outing in the first while Ronald Fernandez was the offensive star for FNU with a team-high nine points on 4-5 shooting.

Notably, Trevon Clarke had excellent production for FNU off the bench with six points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals in 10 minutes. Despite picking up two fouls early, Gary Adams utilized his time on the court for six points and a pair of dimes against a relentless Hornets squad. MC's offensive production ran through an eight-point first half from center Michael Wynn and 12 combined points from Gary Bair and Khalil Baker. MC's size helped them out-rebound FNU 21-17 and earn five blocks heading into a brand-new ball game in the second half.

When play continued, it looked to be another close 20 minutes of basketball with neither team shooting the ball particularly well to close out the game. MC shot 25% from the field while FNU went 6-23 (26.1%). What hurt FNU the most in the closing minutes of the game was a lackluster 8-16 half from the charity stripe. Even with a pair of converted free throws from Johnson to make it a 54-55 MC lead with 24 seconds remaining, MC was able to come up big when they needed it most.

Couzens scooped up the second missed free throw by Baker and was fouled by Clark. Couzens then went on to make its three-point affair with two makes from the line, and FNU's Houston Culpepper missed the game-tying three in the final two seconds of the contest after FNU advanced the ball on a timeout. Notably, Culpepper posted five points and seven rebounds.

Fernandez and Johnson ended the game with 10 points apiece, while Johnson also had a double-double with a team-high 10 rebounds. Clark's breakout game ended with eight points, three steals, a block and two assists in 18 minutes.

Up Next: FNU seeks to turn things around with a 3 p.m. CAC game against Carolina University Jan 30.
