Overtime classic ends in 70-67 loss to FMU Lions

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (Jan. 21, 2026) — Florida National (8-10) suffered a hard-fought 70-67 overtime loss at the hands of Florida Memorial University Lions (9-6) Wednesday night. FNU's Maria De Gracia Karamanite claimed a near double-double with 20 points and nine rebounds to highlight FNU's stellar play at the FMU Wellness Center.

Both teams were neck-and-neck for two quarters of competitive basketball in the first half. FNU went into the break up 31-30 behind a 10-point run from Kaylee Llanos. De Gracia Karamanites tallied five Conquistador rebounds to go along with eight points, despite FNU trailing the Lions 19-15 in rebounds collected.

FMU's Jasmine Worthy led all scorers with 11 entering the third and also did her part on the glass with five boards. FNU's defense was powering its offense in the first half, but costly Conquistador turnovers (16) kept the Lions in contention. So much so, FMU led by as many as eight before the break, but 65% shooting from the Conquistadors was just enough to quench the Lions' run down the stretch of the second.

When play continued in the third quarter, FNU broke slightly ahead with an 18-point frame behind six dominant points from De Gracia. FMU still commanded the glass with ten rebounds but were unable to topple FNU's advantage with just six made field goals and 12 combined points from Kalea Rainey and Sa'mya Stevens.

To its credit, FMU kept working under the basket and in transition by attacking FNU's interior defense to outscore the Conquistadors 19-12 at the end of regulation. Ziul Gonzalez had her best performance of the game with six fourth-quarter points, but despite her efforts, FMU had a chance to seal the game on a pair of free throws from Jazlyn Givens. With the game at a standstill at 61 all with seven seconds remaining, Givens had both her attempts from the stripe miss the mark and ushered in a five-minute overtime period to decide a victor.

In overtime, FMU claimed a four-point lead on made buckets by Givens and Rainey before Jaylyn Laguna got FNU's first points of the period on a layup with just under four minutes left to play. Both teams traded blows until FMU used a layup by Worthy and a 1-1 performance from Rainey at the free-throw line to outlast the visiting Conquistadors.

Gonzalez (15), Laguna (14) and De Gracia (20) ended the night in double figures while Llanos paced the team in assists with five. Notably, the junior guard also tallied all 12 of FNU's points off the bench.
