Women’s basketball scores third consecutive program win over Morris Hornets

HIALEAH, Fla. (Jan. 24, 2026) — Florida National women's basketball (9-10) claimed a much-needed 75-59 win over Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) rival Morris College (4-9) Saturday. The Conquistadors are now 5-3 at home this season and 2-1 in their last three conference games.

To open the game, FNU would be without leading scorer Kaylee Llanos in the starting lineup, but was able to get solid production from fellow guard Valeria Cifuentes. Cifuentes was elite in transition with five assists, two steals and four points in the opening two frames. FNU ended the first up 23-14 thanks to ten crucial points from Jaylyn Laguna. The freshman went 5-5 from the floor in the opening 10 minutes, while Ziul Gonzalez pitched in with six points, two steals and two rebounds.

Morris was struggling offensively early, going 5-17 from the field in the first. The Hornets were paced by five points from Jada Teasley and four from Jazmyne Lyde and were only able to add ten to their total in the second. Before halftime, Kaylynn Jean-Gilles and Naomi Barabie used a pair of made field goals for five FNU points off the bench in the second, and FNU held a healthy 36-24 lead entering the third.

Morris' Zoey McMickens had a special third with nine points to help the Hornets outscore FNU 18-17, but were unable to slow down Maria De Gracia Karamanites. The forward went to work to end the third with six points and four rebounds, and Laguna continued to find success at the rim with a pair of layups in eight minutes.

Despite a valiant effort from the Hornets, FNU was able to stay off a Hornets' comeback in the fourth after eight combined points from Cifuentes and center Karla Quintero. Jessica Carreras was electric off the bench with a three-pointer that brought her team to its feet early, and Madison Betancourt-Pina did the same with a three in the left corner of the court later in the period.

FNU remained undefeated against Morris all-time behind 14-point and 15-point afternoons from Laguna and Gonzalez. Cifuentes and De Gracia had a team-high five rebounds while Jean-Gilles posted one of her best outings this season with seven points, two boards and an assist.
