Morales records 17 kills in 3-1 loss to Mighty Banyans

BAYSHORE GARDENS, Fla. (Sept. 5, 2025) — Florida National volleyball (6-8) produced a competitive 3-1 loss to the New College of Florida Banyans (3-1) on Friday. This was one of three games on the road for FNU at the Mighty Banyans VolleyPalooza at State College of Florida - Bradenton.

This was the first-ever meeting between these two NAIA institutions, and the Conquistadors fell in a close opening set 25-22. Kitula Amaya Morales' fifth kill of the set pushed FNU's lead to three before NCF tied it at 21 with a successful attack from Wiktoria Telecka. Telecka followed her kill with another impressive score to give the Banyans the lead late. A Chriselle Ferdinand service error ended the frame, giving NCF an unexpected 1-0 lead.

In a thrilling and extended set two, NCF and FNU battled for dominance in a rare 34-32 set two. FNU tied the match despite trailing 24-21 in the late stages of the frame. Back-to-back attack errors from NCF helped FNU's push, and a service ace from Morales was enough to bring FNU back into the ball game. Notably, Ferdinand was clutch with two kills down the stretch, and FNU commanded set two despite 24 kills for the home team.

The electricity from set two seemed to abandon FNU in the third, as NCF claimed the frame 25-10. FNU struggled to get its offense off the ground with seven kills and seven errors in the second-to-last set. The Mighty Banyans played a clean game with just two attacking missteps and took this conference into the fourth.

NCF closed out the final frame with 14 kills to FNU's seven. A kill by NCF's Jayleen Santiago and an attacking error by Ferdinand were enough to grant the Banyans their third win of 2025.

Ivette Sandoval posted another game with ten or more assists with 18, and Taysha Ortega followed closely behind with 4. Ariana Long, the reigning Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) Defensive Player of the Week, recorded a team-high 22 digs. Notably, Morales had a game-high 17 kills.

Up Next: FNU has two more games in Bayshore Gardens, Fla., starting with a 2:30 p.m. rematch against Ave Maria University.
