Men’s soccer navigates dramatic second half for 3-2 win over No. 6 Bellevue

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (Sept. 27, 2025) — RV Florida National men's soccer (4-1-3, 1-0-0) posted its first-ever win against No. 6-ranked Bellevue University (7-4-1, 0-2-0) Saturday in a 3-2 thriller at Dr. Lester Brown Park. The Conquistadors versus Bellevue was featured in three of the last four Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) Championship matches with Bellevue taking home the title in each contest.

FNU was able to atone for some of its past losses to Bellevue behind an impressive first-half performance. At the 1:36 mark, Diego Lozano got FNU on the board thanks to a pass from Fabio Zandona Tajra through the middle of the field. Lozano launched a rocket past the gloves of Kaden Simpson to land in the bottom left corner of the net.

Twelve minutes later, the Bruins had another costly mistake, sending Filipe Sette Ribeiro to the penalty marker after knocking down an FNU forward inside the 18-yard box. Sette Ribeiro grabbed his second goal of the week with a smart, clever PK attempt right down the middle that caught Simpson off guard. Things took a turn in the 39th minute, when leading scorer David Luque Rivero was given a straight red card after arguing a no-call near the FNU bench.

At the break, FNU tallied six shots and one corner kick to BU's four shots and four corner kicks.

Bellevue's 11-man advantage would be short-lived when play resumed in the second. BU's Andres Valencia used a tackle to take down Juan Pugin and drew the automatic red for denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity for FNU one minute into the half. FNU looked primed to put this game away before lightning in the area caused a delay for over an hour; both teams headed inside for cover.

Once the all clear was given, the Bruins flipped the script on FNU with goals from Buster Honeywood and Adam Sherwood coming in the 63rd and 64th minutes. Notably, Juan Lagares was credited with assists on both goals, including a corner kick pass to Honeywood.

It took FNU a while to settle in, but once they found their bearing, they relied heavily on veteran energy and tenacity. Finally, in the 79th, Christian Omar Hernandez sped down the right wing of the field to feed a pass to Sette Ribeiro in the crowded box. The Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, native did what he does best and used his whole body to bury his second goal of the afternoon and the eventual game-winner.

The Conquistadors played smart in the final ten minutes, ending the game with a total of 10 shots and five corner kicks. FNU goalkeeper Vitor Caetano Pedrosa had three saves in the win and faced five shots.
