Sette Ribeiro and Pugin claim first goals of 2025 in win over Gyrenes

HIALEAH, Fla. (Sept. 23, 2025) — Florida National men's soccer (3-1-3) keeps its undefeated streak against Ave Maria University (4-3-2) alive, defeating the Gyrenes 2-0 in its home opener at Henry Milander Park Tuesday.

FNU had previously posted an impressive 4-1 win over AMU on Sept. 1, behind three goals from forward David Luque Rivero. In the first half of Tuesday's rematch at Ted Hendricks Stadium, FNU's Filipe Sette Ribeiro was dangerously close to scoring in the early minutes of the period, recording a few attempts that just missed the mark against goalkeeper Andrija Vujakovic.

Sette Ribeiro would not be denied for long, using a precise cross from midfielder Juan Pugin to dive kick his first goal of 2025 in the 23rd minute of the match. The Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, had a team-leading six goals in 2024 and set the tempo early for FNU against Ave Maria. The Gyrenes looked thrown by FNU's stout defense and relentless offensive pressure, and AMU ended the half with just one shot. FNU was awarded five of the first eight corners before both teams went to the locker rooms for halftime.

Their visit to the locker rooms was extended as lightning in the area forced the second half to resume nearly two hours after the first period ended. Once the weather cleared, FNU tallied eight shots in the final 45 minutes and allowed just five from the visiting team.

In the final two minutes, FNU's second-year freshman, Augusto Pugin, grabbed his first career goal after a stellar leading pass through the middle of the field from former NAIA All-American Ricardo Delwing

Goalkeeper Vitor Caetano Pedrosa faced a relatively quiet afternoon with no goals allowed and two saves recorded. Vujakovic claimed six saves in the loss.

Up Next: FNU and Bellevue will go head-to-head Sept. 27 at Dr. Lester Brown Park, a rematch of three of the last four CAC Championships.
