A short-handed men’s soccer squad settles for tie against FMU

HIALEAH, Fla. (Sept. 17, 2025) — Conquistador men's soccer (2-1-3) used goals from David Luque Rivero and Diego Lozano to earn a 2-2 draw on the road versus Florida Memorial University (2-3-2). The stormy Wednesday afternoon battle at Dr. Lester Brown Park was FNU's third tie against Sun Conference opponents this season and just its second ever tie against FMU in program history.

The Conquistadors faced some adversity early on against the Lions, allowing an FMU goal in the ninth minute of the match. Nikos Koutsourais delivered the goal thanks to a crafty pass from Michel Klein. FNU entered the half trailing 1-0, but did manage to post six shots in the period to FMU's five. The Conquistadors forced the lone corner of the half and played a clean game with just five fouls in the middle of the field.

Once play resumed in the second, FMU did what it could to protect its lead before FNU made things level in the 71st minute. Christian Omar Hernandez did what he does best and orchestrated a stunning goal for Luque when the road team needed it most. Luque's strike was FNU's only shot attempt up until that point, but it opened the door for Lozano's converted penalty kick seven minutes later, as FMU's defense began to crack under the pressure.

Despite the late 2-1 lead, FNU was forced to play the final six minutes of the game with 10 men after Diego Alejandro Zogbi Tirado was issued a red card on a hard foul. This left the door open for FMU, and the Lions burst through with an equalizer from Julian Restrepo two minutes after Zogbi's ejection. Restrepo's heroics were enough to keep FNU at bay, and the Conquistadors have not defeated FMU since the 2023 season.

Goalkeeper Joaquin Di Julio had four saves and faced six shots. FMU racked up six shot attempts in the final 45 minutes, and FNU recorded two.
