FNU falls to Gyrenes in straight sets

AVE MARIA, Fla. (Aug. 27, 2025) — Florida National (2-7) lost its seventh game of 2025, conceding a 3-0 victory to the Ave Maria University Gyrenes (1-5). This is AMU's first win of the season, and FNU moved to 5-18 against Ave Maria dating back to 2015.

The AMU Gyrenes came into this non-conference matchup fresh off a 3-0 loss to the Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) standouts, Florida College, the previous night on the road.

Early on, the Gyrenes looked to avoid back-to-back losses, and both teams seemed eager to take control of the contest. FNU did begin to pull away, however, using an attacking error from Beatriz Rissi to eventually take a 17-12 lead.
Unfortunately, AMU went on a 5-1 run to tie the match at 18.

AMU claimed the set on 15 kills and a service error from Alejandra Gonzalez Perez. The following game was where Ave Maria made it tough for FNU, posting a 25-18 victory off 13 kills. Both teams had seven attacking errors in the frame, and Kitula Amaya Morales had three kills. The Miami native's second successful attack of the period helped give FNU a 9-6 advantage, but attacking errors from the Conquistadors pulled the Gyrenes ahead down the stretch. AMU ended the second with a successful attack by Mara Delyon.

The final set of the match saw FNU post a game-high ten kills, but Ave Maria was able to silence the Conquistadors' hope of a comeback with 12 thunderous kills. Morales had six of her 11 kills in the third, and AMU broke a five-game losing skid off back-to-back attacking errors from FNU to send both teams to center court for postgame handshakes.

Morales led the way with 11 kills, and Ariana Long had 16 digs. Ivette Sandoval was clutch with 19 assists, and senior Taysha Ortega returned for six assists. Keelee Okoro had a great evening at the net with three assisted blocks.

Up Next: FNU embarks on a four-game tournament slate at the USCAA Tip-Off from August 29-30.
