Conquistadors come out on top against Columbia Koalas

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (Aug. 22, 2025) — Florida National (2-6) departed the Palm Beach Juniors Red Robin, splitting its two matches in West Palm Beach, Fla., Friday. The Conquistadors toppled the Columbia College Koalas (0-3) in three sets before losing in a similar fashion to Mobile (4-0).

Against the Koalas, the Conquistadors capitalized on 11 attacking errors from Columbia in the opener, and Kitula Amaya Morales was stout with five of FNU's nine kills. The Koalas picked up two service errors towards the end of the period, which helped FNU gain its first 1-0 match lead of the tournament.

Set two saw FNU continue to flourish opposite the Columbia defense. A successful attack by Lily Hitchcock put FNU in front 19-14, and a 6-5 run for the Conquistadors ended the set 25-19. FNU's 2-0 match lead was sealed after freshman Chriselle Ferdinand connected on a crushing kill to move both teams to the opposite bench for set three.

FNU sent Columbia packing in the third behind nine attacking errors from the team out of Columbia, South Carolina. The Conquistadors tallied nine kills in the frame and cemented their victory on a kill from Keelee Okoro

Morales recorded another impressive performance with 12 digs and eight kills. Ariana Long was all over the court with 13 digs, and Ivette Sandoval was reliable with 16 assists.

FNU's second match of the afternoon against Mobile was a competitive battle, in which the Rams took home a 25-16, 28-18, and 25-22 victory. FNU produced just 16 kills throughout the first two sets while the Rams scored 15 per frame. The opener was close early on, as FNU's Long and Grace Leffler combined for a block to make it a 9-7 Ram lead. Mobile outscored FNU 16-9 down for a 1-0 match lead, despite Ferdinand picking up three kills.

Set two was where the Rams solidified their advantage, winning with 15 kills. Peyton Frazer closed out the second with her eighth successful attack, and FNU had four costly errors heading into the third. The final game of the afternoon was where FNU produced its most successful showing on offense, posting 14 kills and just five errors. A big part of this run was Ferdinand's eight kills. With things squared at 22 all, a kill by Frazer, Sophie Dorris, and an attacking error by Ferdinand sent the Rams back to Alabama 4-0.

Ferdinand and Morales combined for 21 kills, while Sandoval had 26 assists.
