Volleyball drops a pair of close matches in West Palm Beach

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (Aug. 21, 2025) — Despite keeping things interesting through six sets at the Palm Beach Juniors Round Robin, Florida National (1-5) fell in back-to-back matches to Southeastern University (3-0) and tournament host Keiser University (3-3). FNU totaled 53 kills through both 3-0 losses, and Kitula Amaya Morales posted a nine-kill performance in both contests.

In game one, SEU got off to a hot start and took a 1-0 lead in a 25-13 set-one outing. Early on, Ivette Sandoval and Keelee Okoro combined for a block to make it a 6-5 Fire advantage. However, SEU found another gear, outsourcing FNU 18-8 through the remainder of the frame. FNU tallied some unforced missteps, recording seven attacking errors in the first and second sets.

Set two was a more positive showing for FNU, as the Conquistadors took a 5-0 lead before falling 25-17. Morales picked up three of her nine kills in the second, but the Fire's Laura Bonomi grabbed two clutch kills at the tail end of the period to secure a 2-0 match in favor of the team out of Lakeland, Fla.

Facing a tough deficit, FNU showed some fight in the third. In the closest game of the match, FNU fell just short, 25-22, to SEU after Okoro came alive for four kills. Trailing 22-19 late, FNU rattled off three straight points thanks to attacking errors by Yarelis Lopez and Annelise de Jong, and Morales' final kill of the match. SEU called a timeout to cool FNU's run and ended the game with a three-score rally of their own.

Ariana Long picked up 11 of FNU's 42 kills, and Sandoval had a team-high 22 assists.

In FNU's final match of the early afternoon, the Conquistadors shook off the disappointing game against SEU for some gritty volleyball opposite the Seahawks. FNU missed the mark in set one, 25-22, tallying 13 kills. FNU conceded a costly service ace and a service error by Alejandra Gonzalez towards the end of the set that up the home team in the driver's seat.

The following set saw both teams evenly matched despite KU taking a 15-9 advantage about midway through the period. Morales and Okoro accounted for three of FNU's six kills, but an attacking error by Chriselle Ferdinand gave KU the 2-0 match lead. Set three saw FNU trail 11-5 after a successful attack from Okoro. The Conquistadors played from behind the entire third before Ferdinand's service ace forced a KU timeout with the score at 20-17.

Out of the break, FNU hung around but ultimately had no answer to a KU squad at home, falling 25-22.
Sandoval was credited with 21 assists, while Morales and Long accounted for 21 of FNU's 49 digs.

Up Next: FNU returns to Keiser for games against Columbia College and Mobile tomorrow at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
