Conquistadors defeat FMU for first victory of 2025

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (Aug. 16, 2025) — Florida National volleyball (1-3) exits the Palm Beach Juniors Classic hosted by Keiser University on top, defeating Florida Memorial (0-4) in three sets. FNU started the day with a 3-0 loss to RV Taylor University (3-0) out of Indiana in the 8 a.m. slot before trouncing FMU in the early afternoon.

Against the Taylor University Trojans, FNU tallied just 18 kills through three frames while the Trojans levied 45 combined kills. In the opener, TU took a 10-0 lead thanks in part to three service aces in the early goings. Kills from Daviona Bernard and Lily Hitchcock got FNU on the board, but didn't do much to deter the Trojans' offensive scheme. TU went on a 12-10 run, and a kill from Suzanne Storey gave the team from the Hoosier state the 1-0 lead.

In the following frames, FNU struggled to score on TU's defense. The Trojans recorded 10 assisted blocks in the win while FNU was held to just two. Hitchcock accounted for two of FNU's seven kills in set two, and TU ended the frame on a 10-4 scoring run. FNU conceded its third loss in 2025 after a thrilling 25-13 defeat in the third frame. Reagan Kleima scored the 12th and final Trojan kill of the game to send FNU off the court.

Notably, Ivette Sandoval had eight of FNU's 16 assists and Kitula Amaya Morales tallied a team-high 10 digs and six kills.

Opposite Florida Memorial, FNU got its first set win of the young 2025 season in 25-19 fashion. The Conquistadors went ahead 8-4 before the Lions made it a tied affair on a block by L'Fe Roberts and Aviyah Henderson. Three straight kills by Keelee Okoro and a kill by Hitchcock put FNU ahead once more and forced an FMU timeout. The Conquistadors preserved their advantage on a 13-11 run and entered set two with a 1-0 lead.

Set two saw FNU win 25-12 after freshman Grace Leffler and Okoro combined for five of FNU's ten kills. Alejandra Gonzalez had the set-ending kill, while the Lions ended the frame down 2-0 with only three kills in the frame. In game three, FNU battled a hungry Lions squad attempting to force a fourth set. After an attacking error by Juliana Medina made it a 22-21 FMU lead late, the Lions called a timeout before a kill from Okoro tied things up.

Both teams traded blows until an attacking error by FMU's Roberts and a service ace by Ariana Long earned FNU the hard-fought 26-24 victory. Okoro led the way with 11 kills, and Long was clutch with seven digs. Taysha Ortega impressed with 10 assists.
