The sun sets on softball's CAC run in winless afternoon

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (May 2, 2025) — Conquistador softball (23-27) suffered two losses to exit the 2025 Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) Tournament. The No. 1 seed and tournament host Georgia Gwinnett College Grizzlies (42-8) defeated FNU in a 2-0 contest, and Westcliff University (23-22) lived to play another day with a 4-1 win over FNU.

In game one against the No. 6-ranked Grizzlies, FNU was locked in a standoff with one of the premier programs in the country. The Conquistadors held GGC's high-powered offense to just two hits from Casey Beaver entering the bottom of the fourth.

FNU's All-CAC Second Team honoree, Brunella Beteta, got the start and was delivering from the circle before an untimely lightning delay set FNU back nearly two hours as the tarps were brought out on the diamond of the Grizzly Softball Complex.

When play finally resumed, GGC wasted little time getting its first and only pair of runs in the contest. Jane Hoover was the Grizzlies' game two hero, delivering a two-run double down the left field line to score designated player Savannah Jenkins and right fielder Sophie Sisk.

FNU totaled just two hits the rest of the way, courtesy of singles from Sabrina Castelli and Gianna Hall in the fifth and seventh frames, respectively. GGC's pitcher Kailynn James earned her 15th win of the year with five strikeouts.

FNU is now 0-5 against the Grizzlies and 0-2 in 2025.

With its CAC Tournament hopes in the balance, FNU faced Westcliff with a spot in the championship round on the line. Westcliff tackled a tough path Friday, having to play back-to-back elimination games in a matter of hours.

This did not seem to faze WU's star pitcher, Madison Mendez, as the righty delivered a seven-inning, two-strikeout win from the circle. She totaled 14 innings of work on the day and held FNU's robust offense to five hits and one run.

WU took the early lead courtesy of a two-run homer from Sara Ellerton. This lead was cut in half in the second when Isabella Silva connected on a clutch single through the right side of the field to run in Yleisha Perez
Unfortunately, FNU was held scoreless the remainder of the game while WU added two more runs on an RBI single by Lauren Coppla and a one-run groundout on Alyssa Patlan.

FNU did make one final push at the end of the seventh, loading the bases off an infield single from Thanysha Gil, a single by Castelli and Alissia Vega's hit by pitch. Westcliff did not panic, relying on their infield to get the final out of the game on Alyssa Julien

Up Next: FNU awaits seeding in the USCAA Small College World Series, set to begin May 11.
